This chapter describes the interactions of X-rays with matter, the biological effects of ionizing radiation (including estimated dose thresholds), the science behind radiation dosimetry, and principles of protection of people and the environment. It goes on to describe patient dose according to scanner design, scan parameters, and methods to manage and optimize radiation doses.

ABSTRACTThe effects of ionizing radiation on MOS transistors with gate oxide thickness up to 2 μm have been investigated. The major focus of workers in this area has been on the hardening techniques of technologies. On the other side, our goal is to use MOS devices to reach higher sensitivities in order to detect small amounts of dose. Therefore, sensitivity as well as temperature response in the mil-std range and stability of the dosimeters have been studied.

Intercomparisons are important activities performed to ensure that the services provided by calibration laboratories to end-users follow internationally accepted standards. Ionizing radiation dosimetry intercomparisons are usually of two types - postal thermoluminescent dosimeter intercomparisons and ionization chamber calibration intercomparisons. In this paper, both types of intercomparisons are analysed together with the results of seven years of participation in such intercomparisons. Several discrepancies were discovered as a result of intercomparisons analysis and the resolution of the discrepancies was discussed.
