The method for the determination of the dead volume of RPLC columns by measuring the retention volume of phloroglucinol is compared with the method based on the retention data of homologous series of organic solutes and that based on the use of isotopically labelled components of the mobile phase. The use of homologous series is tedious and moreover, satisfactory results are not always obtained. The phloroglucinol method is found well suited to replacing the method based on the use of isotopically labelled components of the mobile phase; poorer results with phloroglucinol are only obtained when the mobile phase contains more than 40% (v/v) water, for the Separon SE polymeric sorbent, and in alkaline medium.

The degree and heat of adsorption of 1-butylamine and ammonia were measured on samples of NaHY zeolites activated at 400-600°C. The adsorption isotherms and calorimetric curves were compared for the two bases, and the amount of Bronsted and Lewis acid centres was determined from the calorimetric curves.

Determination of the Freundlich adsorption isotherms for linuron with some peats showed that the adsorption coefficient, K, is closely related to the degree of decomposition as measured by the rubbed fibre content and the pyrophosphate index. The K values indicate that adsorption increases with decomposition. The analyses required for the determination of K were facilitated by the use of a column extraction technique.
