This study aimed to explore the evolution of surface properties of nanocomposite ceramics during ultrasonic vibration-assisted electrolytic in-process dressing (UVA-ELID) grinding. First, the trajectory of the grain was analyzed, and the motion was simulated using MATLAB to demonstrate the mechanism of UVA-ELID grinding. The critical grinding depth was also calculated under the effect of ultrasonic vibration. Then, the conventional ELID (C-ELID) and UVA-ELID grinding were compared. The surface properties, including surface residual stress, surface microstructure, surface roughness, and surface morphology, were used to evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of UVA-ELID grinding. Whether it was conventional C-ELID or UVA-ELID grinding, the residual compressive stress was introduced into the machined surface, while the former was lower than the latter. The microstructure of the UVA-ELID grinding was evenly distributed, and the ductility removal occurred during material removal. The surface roughness of Ra and Rz was reduced by 14.5% and 20.6%, respectively, during the UVA-ELID grinding. The surface morphology was dramatically changed with the help of ultrasonic vibration. In a word, for nanocomposite ceramic, the UVA-ELID grinding can significantly improve surface performance and achieve a better machining effect.

Land surface reflectance (LSR) is well known as an essential variable to understand land surface properties. The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) be able to observe not only the ocean but also the land with the high temporal and spatial resolution thanks to its channel specification. In this study, we describe the land atmospheric correction algorithm and present the quality of results through comparison with Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and in-situ data for GOCI-II. The GOCI LSR shows similar spatial distribution and quantity with MODIS LSR for both healthy and unhealthy vegetation cover. Our results agreed well with in-situ-based reference LSR with a high correlation coefficient (>0.9) and low root mean square error (<0.02) in all 8 GOCI channels. In addition, seasonal variation according to the solar zenith angle and phenological dynamics in time-series was well presented in both reference and GOCI LSR. As the results of uncertainty analysis, the estimated uncertainty in GOCI LSR shows a reasonable range (<0.04) even under a high solar zenith angle over 70°. The proposed method in this study can be applied to GOCI-II and can provide continuous satellite-based LSR products having a high temporal and spatial resolution for analyzing land surface properties.

Abstract Solid-liquid composite lubrication system has attracted an increased interest for low friction and wear. Nevertheless, the effect of mechanical and surface properties of the solid materials, especially the mechanical and surface properties governed by doping elements, on the tribological performance solid-liquid composite lubrication system is still not well comprehended. Here, we reported the effect of W content on the mechanical and surface properties of W-DLC coatings as well as the tribological properties of W-DLC coatings under (choline chloride-urea and choline chloride-thiourea) deep eutectic solvents lubrication. Although the wear of W-DLC coatings under dry friction increases with W content, the wear under DESs is slight when coatings show excellent wettability to DESs or a DES-derived tribochemical film is formed. We demonstrate that the tribological behavior of W-DLC and DESs composite lubrication system is related to the mechanical properties of W-DLC coatings together with the contact angle and tribochemical interaction between DESs and W-DLC coatings.

The ultrasonic treatment of metal products in liquid is used mainly to remove various kinds of contaminants from surfaces. The effects of ultrasound not only separate and remove contaminants, they also significantly impact the physical–mechanical and geometric properties of the surfaces of products if there is enough time for treatment. The aim of this study was to compare the dynamics of ultrasonic cavitation effects on the surface properties of 45 (ASTM M1044; DIN C45; GB 45) and 40Kh (AISI 5140; DIN 41Cr4; GB 40Cr) structural steels. During the study, changes in the structure, roughness, sub-roughness, and microhardness values of these materials were observed. The results showed significant changes in the considered characteristics. It was found that the process of cavitation erosion involves at least 3 stages. In the first stage, the geometric properties of the surface slightly change with the accumulation of internal stresses and an increase in microhardness. The second stage is characterized by structure refinement, increased roughness and sub-microroughness, and the development of surface erosion. In the third stage, when a certain limiting state is reached, there are no noticeable changes in the surface properties. The lengths of these stages and the quantitative characteristics of erosion for the considered materials differ significantly. It was found that the time required to reach the limiting state was longer for carbon steel than for alloy steel. The results can be used to improve the cleaning process, as well as to form the required surface properties of structural steels.

The SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant exhibits striking immune evasion and is spreading globally at an unprecedented speed. Understanding the underlying structural basis of the high transmissibility and greatly enhanced immune evasion of Omicron is of high importance. Here through cryo-EM analysis, we present both the closed and open states of the Omicron spike, which appear more compact than the counterparts of the G614 strain, potentially related to the Omicron substitution induced enhanced protomer-protomer and S1-S2 interactions. The closed state showing dominant population may indicate a conformational masking mechanism of immune evasion for Omicron spike. Moreover, we capture two states for the Omicron S/ACE2 complex with S binding one or two ACE2s, revealing that the substitutions on the Omicron RBM result in new salt bridges/H-bonds and more favorable electrostatic surface properties, together strengthened interaction with ACE2, in line with the higher ACE2 affinity of the Omicron relative to the G614 strain. Furthermore, we determine cryo-EM structures of the Omicron S/S3H3 Fab, an antibody able to cross-neutralize major variants of concern including Omicron, elucidating the structural basis for S3H3-mediated broad-spectrum neutralization. Our findings shed new lights on the high transmissibility and immune evasion of the Omicron variant and may also inform design of broadly effective vaccines against emerging variants.
