It is known that every semigroup of normal completely positive maps P = {Pt:t≥ 0} of ℬ(H), satisfying Pt(1) = 1 for every t ≥ 0, has a minimal dilation to an E0 acting on ℬ(K) for some Hilbert space K⊇H. The minimal dilation of P is unique up to conjugacy. In a previous paper a numerical index was introduced for semigroups of completely positive maps and it was shown that the index of P agrees with the index of its minimal dilation to an E0-semigroup. However, no examples were discussed, and no computations were made. In this paper we calculate the index of a unital completely positive semigroup whose generator is a bounded operator [Formula: see text] in terms of natural structures associated with the generator. This includes all unital CP semigroups acting on matrix algebras. We also show that the minimal dilation of the semigroup P={ exp tL:t≥ 0} to an E0-semigroup is is cocycle conjugate to a CAR/CCR flow.

We study the quasifree algebraic K-flow τ on the hyperfinite factor ℳ with the expanding subfactor [Formula: see text] generated by representations π of the C*-algebra of the canonical anticommutation relations (CAR) [Formula: see text] over separable Hilbert space ℋ. The type of ℳ and [Formula: see text] can be II1 or IIIλ, 0<λ<1, depending on π. The K-flow τ is obtained by the quasifree lifting of one-parameter group ST consisting of shifts in ℋ with the discrete parameter T=Z or the continuous one T=R. We prove that acting on τ by a quasifree inner Markovian cocycle, one can get the required asymptotic behavior of the perturbed group restriction on [Formula: see text].

Bures had defined a metric on the set of normal states on a von Neumann algebra using GNS representations of states. This notion has been extended to completely positive maps between C*-algebras by Kretschmann, Schlingemann and Werner. We present a Hilbert C*-module version of this theory. We show that we do get a metric when the completely positive maps under consideration map to a von Neumann algebra. Further, we include several examples and counter examples. We also prove a rigidity theorem, showing that representation modules of completely positive maps which are close to the identity map contain a copy of the original algebra.

For the Cauchy problem of nonlinear elastic wave equations for 3D isotropic, homogeneous and hyperelastic materials with null conditions, global existence of classical solutions with small initial data was proved in R. Agemi (Invent. Math. 142 (2000) 225–250) and T. C. Sideris (Ann. Math. 151 (2000) 849–874) independently. In this paper, we will give some remarks and an alternative proof for it. First, we give the explicit variational structure of nonlinear elastic waves. Thus we can identify whether materials satisfy the null condition by checking the stored energy function directly. Furthermore, by some careful analyses on the nonlinear structure, we show that the Helmholtz projection, which is usually considered to be ill-suited for nonlinear analysis, can be in fact used to show the global existence result. We also improve the amount of Sobolev regularity of initial data, which seems optimal in the framework of classical solutions.

This chapter proves that Bruhat-Tits buildings exist. It begins with a few definitions and simple observations about quadratic forms, including a 1-fold Pfister form, followed by a discussion of the existence part of the Structure Theorem for complete discretely valued fields due to H. Hasse and F. K. Schmidt. It then considers the generic unramified cases; the generic semi-ramified cases, the generic ramified cases, the wild unramified cases, the wild semi-ramified cases, and the wild ramified cases. These cases range from a unique unramified quadratic space to an unramified separable quadratic extension, a tamely ramified division algebra, a ramified separable quadratic extension, and a unique unramified quaternion division algebra. The chapter also describes ramified quaternion division algebras D₁, D₂, and D₃ over K containing a common subfield E such that E/K is a ramified separable extension.

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to introduce and give some properties of l-Rees matrix Γ-semigroups. Generalizing the results given by Guowei and Ping, concerning the congruences and lattice of congruences on regular Rees matrix Γ-semigroups, the structure theorem of l-congruences lattice of l - Γ-semigroup M = μº(G : I; L; Γe) is given, from which it follows that this l-congruences lattice is distributive.
