The gamma-ray spectrum following thermal neutron capture in aluminum has been studied using a Ge(Li) pair spectrometer. A total of 143 transitions has been observed above 2.1 MeV, and most of these have been placed in a decay scheme. Some 51 levels in 28Al are observed to be populated in the reaction. The Q value for the 27Al(n,γ)28Al reaction is estimated to be 7725.4 ± 0.5 keV, and the multiplicity is found to be 2.0. The mean relative strengths of primary E1 and M1 transitions have been calculated and an attempt has been made to use these to determine the multipolarities of primary transitions leading to levels of unknown parity.
