This chapter covers the definitions and types of major incidents, including the planning and preparation for critical care areas and the role critical care staff will play. The principles of triage and planning for increasing critical care capacity are outlined. It refers back to lesson learnt from significant major incidents such as the Madrid bombing and Hurricane Katrina. Blast injuries, including their impact and their management, are outlined. The planning and management of pandemics is discussed including personal protective equipment and the support needed for staff.
