Sm0.3Ce(0.7-x)MoxO(1.85+δ) yellow pigments were prepared by solid-state synthesis method, which were obtained by doping molybdenum for substitution of Ce4+ in Sm0.3Ce0.7O1.85. Effects of Molybdenum doping amount on crystal structure of the pigments were investigated and the coloring mechanism of the pigments was analyzed. The results show that molybdenum doping has markedly changed the color of the pigments. The color of pigments changed from cream to yellow as molybdenum doping amount increased from x=0.00 to x=0.04. And the color changed from yellow to yellow green when x was adjusted from x=0.05 to x=0.07. When x=0.08, the color of pigments changed to gray.

AbstractThe IR spectrum of V4Nb18O55 has been compared with the IR spectra of selected niobates of known structures to show structural relations between these compounds. This comparison shows that V4Nb18O55 has crystal structure related to T-Nb2O5, W16Nb18O94 and Ba2NaNb5O15. On the other hand, reaction between V2O5 and H-Nb2O5 yields a solid solution of V2O5 in VNb9O25. It has been proposed two models of synthesized solid solution with formulas V1+xNb9-xO25 or V1+xNb9O25+5x/2.Independently of Nb2O5 polymorph, used for synthesis, the metastable compound VNbO5 cannot be synthesized in the solid state below 650°C

AbstractResults on the influence of mechanoactivation (3–30 min) in a planetary ball mill on the composition, crystal structure, IR spectra and morphology of EuCl3·6H2O, dibenzoylmethane (HDBM) and mixtures of EuCl3·6H2O — HDBM and EuCl3·6H2O — HDBM — 1,10-phenathroline (phen) are presented. Mechanoactivation leads to a decrease of interplanar distances of the EuCl3·6H2O and HDBM and partial synthesis of Eu(DBM)3 and Eu(DBM)3·phen in the respective mixtures. The fluorescence properties of the products of activation (excitation and emission spectra, lifetime of the excited states) are similar to those of the complexes produced by the conventional “wet” methods, but the strongest excitation of the mechanochemically produced solid state samples is achieved at higher wavelength. Crystals of different forms (prismatic, needle-, long-length-leaf- and rod-like) are formed by mechanoactivation of the mentioned mixtures.

AbstractIn this paper the relationships between the crystal structure, chemical composition and electronic structure of laser materials, and their optical properties are discussed. A brief description is given of the different laser activators and of the influence of the matrix on laser characteristics in terms of crystal field strength, symmetry, covalency and phonon frequencies. The last part of the paper lays emphasis on the means to optimize the matrix-activator properties such as control of the oxidation state and site occupancy of the activator and influence of its concentration.
