In the title coordination polymer, {[Ce2(C8H4O5)3(H2O)9]·6H2O}n, the asymmetric unit is formed by two CeIIIatoms, three 5-hydroxybenzene-1,3-dicarboxylate ligands, nine coordinating water molecules and six water molecules of crystallization. The two CeIIIatoms are bridged by 5-hydroxybenzene-1,3-dicarboxylate ligands acting in a bis-bidentate coordination mode, generating infinite chains along [101]. Both independent metal atoms are nine-coordinated, one by four O atoms from the carboxylate groups of two bridging 5-hydroxybenzene-1,3-dicarboxylate ligands and five O atoms from water molecules, generating a tricapped trigonal–prismatic geometry. The coordination around the second CeIIIatom is similar, except that one of the water molecules is replaced by an O atom from an additional 5-hydroxybenzene-1,3-dicarboxylate ligand acting in a monodentate coordination mode and forming a capped square-antiprismatic geometry.

Heterotopic ligands offer the possibility of preparing polynuclear bimetallic complexes. Recent studies of heteroditopic ligands and their metal complexes have focused on novel supramolecular systems, biological activity, and the development of MRI contrast agents. The heteroditopic ligand Bipy–CH2–O–CH2–C(pz)3(Bipy-L; Bipy is 2,2′-bipyridine and pz is pyrazolyl) reacts with AgBF4to produce the coordination polymercatena-poly[[silver(I)-(μ-5-{[tris(pyrazol-1-yl)methoxy]methyl-κ2N,N′}-2,2′-bipyridine-κ2N,N′)] diethyl ether hemisolvate], {[Ag(C22H20N8O)]BF4·0.5C4H10O}n, and with Re(CO)5Br to form the discrete compound bromidotricarbonyl(5-{[tris(pyrazol-1-yl)methoxy]methyl}-2,2′-bipyridine-κ2N,N′)rhenium(I), [ReBr(C22H20N8O)(CO)3]. The silver(I) compound is a one-dimensional coordination polymer, built up by a κ2coordination mode of the bipyridine group and a κ2–κ0coordination mode of the –C(pz)3donor set. In [ReBr(Bipy-L)(CO)3], the ligand coordinates onlyviathe bipyridine end, leaving the –C(pz)3donor set free for further coordination interactions.

We report herein a new two-dimensional zirconium-based luminescent coordination polymer exhibiting selective fluorescence responses towards a variety of volatile organic compounds upon exposure in the vapor phase.
