Neutron scattering by spin waves in erbium at 4.6 °K in its magnetic cone phase has been measured along the c axis and to a lesser extent along lines parallel to the a axis. The results, when combined with assumptions about the crystal field interactions, lead to the spin-wave dispersion relation and the Fourier transform of the exchange interaction. Inconsistencies which arise from the crystal field (anisotropy) considerations lead to the conclusion that the model Hamiltonian on which the analysis is based is inadequate.Measurements of the temperature dependence of the scattering have also been made. No well-defined spin-wave groups were observed in the more complex phase above 20 °K.
