In this paper, which is a continuation of [4], the necessary theoretical background is given to enable the calculation of the irreducible Brauer projective characters of a given finite group to be carried out. As an example, this calculation is done for the alternating group A (7) in §3. In a future paper the calculations for the Mathieu groups will be presented.

1. Introduction.Let p be a prime number. A finite group G = (G, B, N, R, U) is called a split(B, N)-pair of characteristic p and rank n if(i) G has a (B, N)-pair (see [3, Definition 2.1, p. B-8]) where H= B ⋂ N and the Weyl group W= N/H is generated by the set R= ﹛ω 1,… , ω n) of “special generators.”(ii) H= ⋂n∈N n-1Bn(iii) There exists a p-subgroup U of G such that B = UH is a semidirect product, and H is abelian with order prime to p.A (B, N)-pair satisfying (ii) is called a saturated (B, N)-pair. We call a finite group G which satisfies (i) and (iii) an unsaturated split (B, N)- pair. (Unsaturated means “not necessarily saturated”.)

The degree pattern of a finite group G denoted by D(G) was introduced in [5]. We say that G is k-fold OD-characterizable if there exist exactly k non-isomorphic finite groups having the same order and same degree pattern as G. In the present article, we show that the alternating group A10 and the automorphism group Aut (McL) are 2-fold OD-characterizable, while the automorphism group Aut (J2) is 3-fold OD-characterizable and the symmetric group S10 is 8-fold OD-characterizable. It is worth mentioning that the prime graphs associated to these groups are connected and, in fact, among the groups with this property, they are the first groups which are investigated for OD-characterizability.

Let G be a finite group. A subgroup H of G is said to be S-permutable in G if itpermutes with all Sylow subgroups of G. In this note we prove that if P, the Sylowp-subgroup of G (p > 2), has a subgroup D such that 1 <|D|<|P| and all subgroups H of P with |H| = |D| are S-permutable in G, then G′ is p-nilpotent.

In this paper, we investigate [Formula: see text]-nilpotency of a finite group. As applications, we give some sufficient and necessary conditions for a finite group belongs to a saturated formation.

Let G be a finite group. A subgroup K of a group G is called an [Formula: see text]-subgroup of G if NG(K) ∩ Kx ≤ K for all x ∈ G. The set of all [Formula: see text]-subgroups of G is denoted by [Formula: see text]. In this paper, we investigate the structure of a group G under the assumption that certain abelian subgroups of prime power order belong to [Formula: see text].

Let G be a finite group. A subgroup H of G is called SS-quasinormal in G if there is a supplement B of H to G such that H permutes with every Sylow subgroup of B. A subgroup H of G is called CSS-subgroup in G if there exists a normal subgroup K of G such that G = HK and H ∩K is SS-quasinormal in G. In this paper, we investigate the influence of minimal CSS-subgroups of G on its structure. Our results improve and generalize several recent results in the literature.
