Description of a new species Coomansus batxatensis (Mononchida, Mononchidae) from Vietnam, with an updated key to species

Abstract Coomansus batxatensis sp. nov., recorded from Vietnam, is described and illustrated and its phylogenetic relationship within the Mononchida is analysed. The molecular data (18S and 28S ribosomal DNA) are provided for the new species. The new species is characterized by small body size (body length, L = 0.7–0.9 mm); buccal cavity sub-rectangular in shape, flattened at base, 21–24 × 12–13 μm or 1.9 (1.7–2.0) times as long as wide; posterior position of dorsal tooth apex (59–63% from the base of buccal cavity); pars refringens vaginae with faint and small (2.5 × 1.7 μm) teardrop-shaped pieces, short pars distalis vaginae; and males with short spicules (50–51.5 μm) with rounded head and conical blade part. The new species is close to Coomansus parvus but differs from it by the smaller buccal cavity size, more posterior position of the dorsal tooth apex, longer tail and presence of males. An updated identification key to Coomansus species and a compendium of all the species known are presented.

Actus hagiangensis sp. nov. is described and illustrated from Vietnam. Females of the new species are characterized by medium body size (L = 1.1–1.4 mm), barrel shaped buccal cavity of medium size (26–31 x 13–15 µm) with dorsal tooth apex located 75–81% of buccal cavity length from base and two longitudinal subventral rows, each with four rasp-like denticles; reproductive system didelphic-amphidelphic, vagina short with distinct par refringens vaginae, sclerotized pieces globular in optical section; tail elongate-conoid, slightly ventrally arcuate, with three caudal glands and prominent spinneret. Male with spicules 46 µm in length, and slender, slightly curved gubernaculum, 12 µm long, without accessory piece. This is the first report of a male specimen of the genus Actus. The new species is close to A. salvadoricus but differs by the larger buccal cavity, more anterior position of the dorsal tooth apex and more rounded vaginal sclerotized pieces.

Abstract The present study describes Cacatuocotyle papilionis n. sp. (Monogenea, Dactylogyridae) from the skin of the characid fishes Astyanax lacustris (Lütken, 1875) (=Astyanax altiparanae Garutti & Britski, 2000) and Astyanax fasciatus (Cuvier, 1819) (Characiformes, Characidae) from the Southeast of Brazil, supported by morphological and molecular data. The new species differs from all congeners, mainly due to the morphology of the ventral bar (resembling a butterfly), accessory piece, and the number of rings of the male copulatory organ (MCO), comprising a coiled tube with 4.5-5.5 counterclockwise rings. The first molecular data for this monogenean genus is provided in this study, using the partial sequences of the ribosomal gene (28S), as well as providing an identification key to the species.

A new species of free-living marine nematode is described from Itapuã beach, northeast of Brazil. Pomponema veronicae sp. n. differs from other species of Pomponema by having buccal cavity with large pointed dorsal tooth, two subventral teeth and pairs of denticles, gubernaculum with two L-shaped lateral plates and having a membrane at its distal end that connects to L-shaped plate, and presence of a ventral orifice at distal end of L-shaped plates. It also differs from other species in the size of spicules and gubernaculum. The new species is considered most closely related to Parapomponema species because of the L-shaped lateral plates of gubernaculum, but the taxonomic status of Parapomponema was reviewed and Parapomponema and Propomponema are now synonymized with Pomponema. Pomponema cyatholaimoides is considered as a species inquirendum and Pomponema carinatum is accepted as Pomponema loticum. An updated identification key to species of Pomponema is included.

Truxonchus quangi sp. n. is described and illustrated from Vietnam. Females of the new species are characterized by large body size (L = 4.8-5.8 mm); barrel shaped buccal cavity of large size (105-113 x 66-73 µm) with one dorsal tooth and two subventral teeth posteriorly directed, of equal shape, size and apex position; dorsal tooth apex located 36-39% of buccal cavity length from its base; reproductive system didelphic-amphidelphic, vagina long, 39-45% of corresponding body width, with distinct par refringens vaginae, sclerotized pieces rounded in optical section; tail long, filiform, ventrally arcuate, with three small caudal glands in tandem and prominent subventral spinneret. The new species is close to T. dolichurus but differs by the larger buccal cavity, more anterior position of the dorsal tooth apex, more anterior vulval position and presence of advulval pores.

Pedicularis wanghongiae M.L.Liu & W.B.Yu, a new species from Gaoligong Mountains in Yunnan Province, southwestern China, is described and illustrated. This new species was found growing in the wet meadow at the top of the mountains near Dulongjiang Township and Cikai Township. Pedicularis wanghongiae is morphologically similar to P. praeruptorum Bonati, but differs from the latter in having an upward bent galea, shorter petioles and only two pubescent filaments. In addition, stems of P. wanghongiae are densely glandular pubescent, and its leaves are abaxially white pubescent along the veins. Furthermore, the pollen grain of P. wanghongiae is bisyncolpate with microfoveolate exine ornamentation. Molecular phylogenetic analyses using four DNA loci (ITS, matK, rbcL and trnL-F) support the delimitation of this new species. Morphologically, this new species should be placed in Pedicularis series Paucifoliatae Prain according to Tsoong’s classification. However, series Paucifoliatae was shown to be paraphyletic based on molecular data. A key to species in series Paucifoliatae is presented, and relationships among these species discussed.

The Backusella genus comprises mucoralean saprobes that inhabit in mainly soil and form transitorily curved (when young, erect at maturity) sporangiophores arising directly from the substratum, with simultaneous production of both sporangia and sporangiola. During a study of Mucorales in soil from an Atlantic Rainforest in Pernambuco, Brazil, one specimen of Backusella was isolated and characterized based on morphological, physiological and molecular data (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 and LSU rDNA sequences). The phylogenetic analyses of the isolate revealed that it belongs to the Backusellaceae and is closely related to species of Backusella. The specimen grew better at 25ºC, with no development at 40ºC, and presented conical and cylindrical columellae possessing a central constriction as well as subglobose sporangiospores 7.5–15 × 5.5–10 µm. Based on the evidences of the analyzed datasets, a new species of Backusella is proposed and a taxonomic key for the species of this genus is provided.

Abstract—Justicia rubrobracteata, a new species from northeastern Brazil, is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to J. aequilabris due to its shrubby habit, and terminal and axillary spicate inflorescences with red flowers. However, J. rubrobracteata is differentiated mainly by the shape and color of its bracts and bracteoles as well as an orangish macula in the corolla, and a torulose capsule. In addition, J. rubrobracteata is only known from northeastern Brazil, from the states of Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte, while J. aequilabris is widely distributed in Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay. A table with the main morphological characters of both species is included, as well as photographs, a key to species of Justicia for the states of Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte in northeastern Brazil, a distribution map of both species, and conservation data for the new species.

A review of species of the genus Blera Billberg, 1820 known from China is given. A new species, Blera longiseta sp. nov., is described. Three species, B. japonica (Shiraki, 1930), B. nitens (Stackelberg, 1923) and B. violovitshi Mutin, 1991, are recorded for the first time from China. An illustrated key to species is provided.

Two braconid genera from the subfamily Alysiinae, Lodbrokia Hedqvist, 1962 and Asyntactus Marshall, 1898, are recorded in the fauna of Russia and in the Asian continent for the first time. A new species Lodbrokia uralica sp. nov. is described from the Urals, and a key to species of this genus is provided. Redescriptions of the female and male of Asyntactus rhogaleus Marshall, 1898 with information about the level of variability of its morphological characters are given. Asyntactus sigalphoides Marshall, 1898 is synonymised with A. rhogaleus Marshall, 1898 (syn. nov.).
