The last ten years have seen a marked increase of interest in agent-oriented technology, in several areas of computer science, including both software engineering and artificial intelligence. Agents are being used, and touted, for applications as diverse as personalised information management, electronic commerce, interface design, computer games, and management of complex commercial and industrial processes. Several deployed systems already use agent technology, and many more commercial and industrial applications are in development.

In the age of information proliferation, openness, open information management, interconnectivity, collaboration and communication advances, extended enterprises must be up to date to the new strategic, economic and organizational structures. Consequently, intelligent software based on agent technology emerges to improve system design, and to increase enterprise competitive position as well. The competitiveness is based on the information management, cooperation, collaboration and interconnectivity. Thus, within these interconnectivity and cooperation, conflicts may arise. The automated negotiation plays a key role to look for a common agreement. Argumentation theory has become an important topic in the field of Multi-Agent Systems and especially in the negotiation problem. In this chapter, first, the proposed model MAIS-E2 (Multi-Agent Information System for an Extended Enterprise) is presented. Then an argumentation based negotiation framework: Relationship-Role and Interest Based Negotiation (R2-IBN) framework is presented, and within this framework, the authors focused mainly on, argument generation module via inference rules and argument selection module via fuzzy logic.

For over a quarter of a century, multi-agent systems have been considered as one of the most promising technologies for conceptualization, software development and implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions. Not so widely but multi-agent technology is also considered as a way of designing complex adaptive systems based on bio-inspired principles of selforganization and evolution. However, in practice, the industry rarely uses multi-agent technology, despite the appearance of new classes of applications for which it is the perfect match, for example, smart cyber-physical systems with digital twins of controlled objects. The paper analyzes the recent anticipations and real achievements in the practical use of multi-agent systems at the industry level. It also identifies the engineering problems that currently impede the extensive industrial implementation of multi-agent systems and technologies as well as the ways to overcome them. Finally, prospects for development of these technologies are evaluated up to the level of industrial implementation.

The vision which is making its way in information technology is to encapsulate organizations’ functionalities within appropriate interfaces and advertise them as one or more Web services, which could be integrated, when brought into play, in workflows. This innovative idea brings with it new outstanding opportunities but also new great issues, related mainly to the ability to automatically discover and compose Web services. Several researchers belonging to the agent community are convinced that this technical area is a natural environment in which the agent technology features can be leveraged to obtain significant advantages. This chapter is aimed at briefly recalling the major results achieved by agent community and showing how their exploitation in the area of service-orientation systems could be very promising.

The theme of this chapter includes topics of matching, auction and negotiation. We have shown that the knowledge of game theory is very important when designing an agent-based matching or negotiation system. The problem of bounded rationality in multi¬-agent systems is also discussed; we put forward the mechanism design and heuristic methods as solutions. A real negotiation scenario is presented to demonstrate our proposed solutions. In addition, we discuss the future trends of the agent technology in e¬commerce system.

Multi-Agent systems (MAS) are typical KBS and intelligent agents are viewed as extensions of KBS. Originating from the field of Distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI), agent and Multi-Agent (MA) technology has been at the forefront of research in the last decade (Nilsson, 1998). Since the late 1980s, researchers have applied agent technology to perform tasks, and it is considered a promising paradigm for intelligent manufacturing (Shen & Norrie, 2001). In the 21st century especially, the manufacturing industry has become more and more competitive in a market that is frequently changing. Manufacturing systems should therefore move to support product innovation, global competitiveness and rapid market responsiveness. Recent new developments in agent and MA technology have brought new and interesting possibilities (Jennings & Wooldridge, 1998), researchers have been trying to develop and apply agent technology for supporting intelligent manufacturing, and there have been many projects in agent-based intelligent manufacturing. The basic theory and applications of agent and MAS are introduced in this chapter. The recent development of agent and MAS is reviewed, and the current research level of MAS is also summarized. Finally, the fundamentals of agent technology including communication and interaction, collaboration and behavior coordination, are presented.
