The papers submitted under Subject 4 of the 1964 Congress in London and Edinburgh were those concerned with the practical application of modern statistical techniques in all branches of insurance.Fourteen papers from eight countries were presented for discussion in London, and the purpose of this note is to outline and comment briefly on the content of these papers—the discussions on related topics which took place in Edinburgh are not included in this review.Statistical methods in general being of fairly recent origin it is not at once obvious whether a particular technique qualifies as modern or not, but I would think it fair to take it that, normally, the calculation of premiums, involving the intelligent classification of risks and the analysis of experience, comes within the field of classical statistical methods.

Some actual aspects of advancement the problem of improvement the heat exchange equipment are considered in the paper. First of all the actual items related to middle and high temperature recuperators are discussed with proper up-to — date approaches. The classification of flue gases heat recovery appliances has been proposed along with the statement and analysis of the main characteristics of the recovery plants and option the ways of optimization the mentioned characteristics. The problem of Reynolds analogy (similarity of relative change the heat transfer phenomenon and variation the hydraulic resistance) within the channels of different purpose and of various cross-section supplied with and without the obstacles has been analyzed in application to separate cases of flow along the surfaces equipped with the cavities (dimples) or the convex elements. Thermal Performance Factor (TPF) of the heat exchange process is qualitatively like to Reynolds analogy factor and is highly depended upon rate of heat transfer and of friction factor in conditions of the scheme under consideration for flow over the surface or flow within the channel. The various media has been compared used as a working body in the heat exchanger’s channels: gaseous, liquid and the nanofluids, the last appeared in practice since 2000. Analysis has been carried out on effect of using the secondary energy emitters (SEE) arranged inside the tube channels, on resulting heat flux by heat exchange between outward flow of combustion products and the inner air flow. The author, after mentioning his previous communications on this subject, stated, that continued investigations of the deposit had yielded the extraordinary number of about 150 species of Diatomaceæ, and that as several of these had been only recently observed, it was nearly certain that more yet remained.Of these species, from 12 to 15 appear to be undescribed, and there are also 7 or 8 new to Britain, or not hitherto admitted as British species.

The classification of the main types of fires is provided, their effect on environmental pollution and adversely affecting people’s health is noted. The harmful effect of the consequences of forest fires on the ecology is shown, the main toxic substances released into the atmosphere are given. The harm caused by industrial fires of flammable and combustible liquids is analyzed. The specifics of extinguishing these fires and the need for Osipovs’s fire nozzles are substantiated. Design features of Osipovs’s fire nozzles are considered. The basics of calculating their tactical and technical characteristics are given. The effectiveness of their practical application in extinguishing forest and industrial fires of oil products is shown. Analytical studies of literary material were conducted. Calculation according empirical formulas and schemes is provided. Polygon and full-scale tests of Osipovs’s manual and fire monitors are presented. As a result of theoretical and experimental studies, the design was optimized and the tactics of using these fire nozzles in a fire were developed. The practical application of Osipovs’s manual and fire monitors allows get better the working conditions of nozzlemans, increasing fire fighting efficiency, reducing environmental pollution and improving its ecology.
