We obtain a number of finiteness results for groups acting on Gromov-hyperbolic spaces. In particular we show that a torsion-free locally quasiconvex hyperbolic group has only finitely many conjugacy classes of n-generated one-ended subgroups.

Let Γ be a fixed hyperbolic group. The Γ-limit groups of Sela are exactly the finitely generated, fully residually Γ groups. We introduce a new invariant of Γ-limit groups called Γ-discriminating complexity. We further show that the Γ-discriminating complexity of any Γ-limit group is asymptotically dominated by a polynomial.

For every hyperbolic groupΓwith Gromov boundary∂Γ, one can form the cross productC∗-algebraC(∂Γ)⋊Γ. For each such algebra, we construct a canonicalK-homology class. This class induces a Poincaré duality mapK∗(C(∂Γ)⋊Γ)→K∗+1(C(∂Γ)⋊Γ). We show that this map is an isomorphism in the case ofΓ=𝔽2, the free group on two generators. We point out a direct connection between our constructions and the Baum-Connes conjecture and eventually use the latter to deduce our result.

Several complexity and decidability results for automatic monoids are shown: (i) there exists an automatic monoid with a P-complete word problem, (ii) there exists an automatic monoid such that the first-order theory of the corresponding Cayley-graph is not elementary decidable, and (iii) there exists an automatic monoid such that reachability in the corresponding Cayley-graph is undecidable. Moreover, it is shown that for every hyperbolic group the word problem belongs to LOGCFL, which improves a result of Cai [8].

In this paper, we initiate a geometric study of graph braid groups. More precisely, by applying the formalism of special colorings introduced in a previous paper, we determine precisely when a graph braid group is Gromov-hyperbolic, toral relatively hyperbolic and acylindrically hyperbolic.

We generalize some results of Paulin and Rips-Sela on endomorphisms of hyperbolic groups to relatively hyperbolic groups, and in particular prove the following. • If G is a nonelementary relatively hyperbolic group with slender parabolic subgroups, and either G is not co-Hopfian or Out (G) is infinite, then G splits over a slender group. • If H is a nonparabolic subgroup of a relatively hyperbolic group, and if any isometric H-action on an ℝ-tree is trivial, then H is Hopfian. • If G is a nonelementary relatively hyperbolic group whose peripheral subgroups are finitely generated, then G has a nonelementary relatively hyperbolic quotient that is Hopfian. • Any finitely presented group is isomorphic to a finite index subgroup of Out (H) for some group H with Kazhdan property (T). (This sharpens a result of Ollivier–Wise).
