Subjects ( n = 60 students) learned and answered questions about 4-term artificial linear orderings described in paragraphs of text. Spacing between terms in ordering was varied by using different mileage distances. Performance was assessed by using spatial diagram questions which either did or did not incorporate the provided information on intervals. The results indicated a spatial analog representation of ordering information and a question-answering strategy using a matching process.
