Novel Li-calix[n]arene complexes (n = 3, 4) having (–S–), (–SO–), (–SO2–), (–CH2OCH2–) or (–CH2–) bridges have been synthesized and fully characterized. Their catalytic activity in the ring opening polymerization of lactones has been studied.

This perspective review discusses metallocalix[n]arene complexes that have been employed in either α-olefin polymerization or in the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters over the last 5 years.

Interaction of p-tert-butylcalix[n]arenes (n = 6, 8) with [TiX4] (X = F, Cl, Br, I) afforded 11 novel compounds with interesting structural features. The catalytic activity of these species in the ROP of cyclic esters was tested.

This review focuses on recent developments concerned with the use of well-defined main group complexes as (pre-)catalysts for the ROP of cyclic esters to give aliphatic polyesters; factors influencing catalytic activity, selectivity and polymer properties are all discussed.

Rare examples of titanium oxa- and aza-calixarenes are reported which are active for the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone, δ-valerolactone and rac-lactide.

A dimeric yttrium phenoxide complex can be oxidized in a stepwise fashion to access three oxidation states. The three states show different activity in the ring opening polymerization of cyclic esters and epoxides.
