Hydro-Québec has developed a transmission system to carry power over long distances to load centres that consists of 30 substations, ten 735 kV lines with over 10,000 km of circuits and a 450 kV dc line 1,000 km long. If 18,800 MW of undeveloped hydroelectric potential is to be integrated into the system eight new high voltage lines will be required. The demands of the domestic and export markets have necessitated improvements in reliability through series compensation coupled with special protection systems. Systems management is based on strategies derived from digital simulations of power flow, stability and transient phenomena. Operation is controlled through a hierarchal system.
