Compounds of copper(II) with chelated β-imino amines are formed by reaction between 4-amino-4-methylpentan-Zone (amp) and copper(II) complexes of ethane-1,2-diamine, propane-1,2- and -1,3-diamine, meso-l,2-diphenylethane-l,2-diamine, 2-(2-aminoethyl)pyridine, 3-azapentane-1,5-diamine, 3-azahexane-1,6-diamine, 4-azaheptane-1,7-diamine, 3,6-diazaoctane-1,8-diamine, 4,8-diazaundecane-1,11-diamine, 3-(2-aminoethyl)-3-azapentane-1,5-diamine and 4,6,6-trimethyl-3,7-diazanon-3-ene-1,9-diamine. Compounds with one β-imino amine group were formed for all the amines, except 1,2-diphenylethane-1,2-diamine and propane-1,3-diamine, and compounds with tetradentate ligands with two β-imino amine groups were formed with the aliphatic diamines. The imine group of the compounds is relatively resistant to hydrolysis.

Compounds of copper(II) perchlorate with 2-aminoethanol (etol) and 3- aminopropan-1-ol (prol) react with 4-amino-4-methylpropan-2-one (amp), and with 4-hydroxy-4-methylpropan-2-one (hmp), to form compounds of stoichiometry [Cu(L)] ClO4, where (L) is a tridentate amine imine olato ligand from amp, or a hydroxy imine olato ligand from hmp. The etol condensation products have 'normal' magnetic susceptibilities, while the prol condensation products show antiferromagnetic spin-coupling. The prol/amp product is diamagnetic at 300 K (-J > 700 cm-1) and the prol/hmp product has a J of -186 cm-1, based on magnetic susceptibility measurements over 100-300 K. Preparations of some related nitrate, thiocyanate and tetrachlorozincate compounds are reported. Possible structures for the compounds are discussed.
