‘Reflex regulation’: An anatomy of promissory science governance

To find whether sweat rate (SR) and forearm skin blood flow ( SkBF ) were reflexly affected by skin temperature (Tsk) we used water-perfused suits to rapidly elevate Tsk during exercise. With this elevation in Tsk, there was a period of little net change in esophageal temperature (Tes) but marked responses in SR and SkBF . During this period a rise in Tsk of 4.2 +/- 0.3 degrees C was associated with an increase in SR of 0.44 +/- 0.09 mg X cm-2 X min-1 and an increase in SkBF of 3.27 +/- 0.42 ml X 100 ml-1 X min-1. Multiple linear regression analysis as well as comparison with control studies in which Tsk was kept cool also reveal a consistent role for Tsk in the reflex regulation of SR and SkBF . Responses in SR and FBF were much more marked at levels of Tsk below 33 degrees C. Below a Tsk of 33 degrees C, SR rose 0.30 +/- 0.06 mg X cm-2 X min-1 per degrees C rise in Tsk, whereas above 33 degrees SR rose only 0.05 +/- 0.01 mg X cm2 X min per degrees C. FBF rose 2.81 +/- 0.60 and 0.77 +/- 0.18 ml X 100 ml-1 X min-1 per degrees C rise in Tsk at the lower and upper ranges of Tsk, respectively.

Acupuncture has a reflex regulation in gastrointestinal functions, which is characterized with segment. In the present study, the neural pathway of electroacupuncture (EA) at orofacial acupoints (ST2) on gastric myoelectric activity (GMA) in rats was investigated. The results indicated that EA at ST2 facilitated spike bursts of GMA, which is similar to EA at limbs and opposite to EA at abdomen. The excitatory effect was abolished by the transaction of infraorbital nerves, dorsal vagal complex lesion, and vagotomy, respectively. In addition, microinjection of L-glutamate into the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) attenuated the excitatory effect. All these data suggest that the dorsal vagal complex is involved in the reflex regulation of EA at orofacial acupoints on gastric functions and NTS-dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV) inhibitory connections may be essential for it.

Simultaneous blockade of systemic AT1 and AT2 receptors or converting enzyme inhibition (CEI) attenuates the hypoglycemia-induced reflex increase of epinephrine (Epi). To examine the role of brain AT1 and AT2 receptors in the reflex regulation of Epi release, we measured catecholamines, hemodynamics, and renin during insulin-induced hypoglycemia in conscious rats pretreated intracerebroventricularly with losartan, PD-123319, losartan and PD-123319, or vehicle. Epi and norepinephrine (NE) increased 60-and 3-fold, respectively. However, the gain of the reflex increase in plasma Epi (Δplasma Epi/Δplasma glucose) and the overall Epi and NE responses were similar in all groups. The ensuing blood pressure response was similar between groups, but the corresponding bradycardia was augmented after PD-123319 ( P < 0.05 vs. vehicle) or combined losartan and PD-123319 ( P < 0.01 vs. vehicle). The findings indicate 1) brain angiotensin receptors are not essential for the reflex regulation of Epi release during hypoglycemia and 2) the gain of baroreceptor-mediated bradycardia is increased by blockade of brain AT2 receptors in this model.
