A new syntopic species of Stygobromus Cope, 1872 (Amphipoda: Crangonyctidae) from groundwaters in Georgia and Florida, USA, with notes on S. floridanus Holsinger & Sawicki, 2016

Abstract Stygobromus doughertyensis n. sp. is described from groundwater habitats in Jackson County, Florida and Dougherty County, Georgia, USA using both morphological and molecular methods. This species occurs syntopically with the morphologically similar S. floridanus, which is newly recorded in Jackson County. The occurrence of S. floridanus in Jackson County marks a range extension for this species, which was described from two caves in Washington County, Florida. The description of S. doughertyensis n. sp. brings the number of described species in the genus Stygobromus to 142 and marks the second species of Stygobromus to be described from the Floridan aquifer.

Abstract Herein, based on molecular and morphological evidence, we report the first record of Eumops bonariensis (Peters 1874) and Pteronotus fuscus (Allen 1911) for Peru, representing a range extension of at least 1580 km (to Ucayali department) and 1860 km (to San Martín department) from the nearest records, respectively; and confirm that Pteronotus rubiginosus (Wagner 1843) is absent in Peru. We also provide comments on the taxonomy, distribution, and natural history of these species. This study highlights the importance of exploring unsampled localities and doing detailed morphological studies and extensive use of molecular methods.

A new population of Opuntia humifusa (Raf.) Raf. was found in Pike County, Kentucky. Consequent examination of other misidentified populations in Kentucky (Harlan and Pike counties) and West Virginia (Jackson County) provides the first known occurrences of Opuntia humifusa (sensu stricto) in Kentucky and a confirmed range extension into the Unglaciated Appalachian Plateaus Province.
