A Gram-negative, non-motile, pale-yellow, rod-shaped bacterial strain, DS-42T, was isolated from a soil in Korea and its taxonomic position was investigated by a polyphasic study. Strain DS-42T grew optimally at 25 °C and pH 7.0–8.0. Strain DS-42T did not form nodules on three different legumes, and the nodD and nifH genes were also not detected by PCR. Strain DS-42T contained Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone. The major cellular fatty acid was C18 : 1 ω7c. The DNA G+C content was 60.8 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA, atpD and recA gene sequences showed that strain DS-42T belonged to the genus Rhizobium. Strain DS-42T showed 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 94.1–97.7 % to the type strains of recognized Rhizobium species. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain DS-42T and the type strains of Rhizobium huautlense, R. galegae, R. loessense and R. cellulosilyticum was 13–19 %, indicating that strain DS-42T was distinct from them genetically. Strain DS-42T can also be differentiated from these four phylogenetically related Rhizobium species by various phenotypic properties. On the basis of phenotypic properties, phylogenetic distinctiveness and genetic data, strain DS-42T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Rhizobium, for which the name Rhizobium soli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DS-42T (=KCTC 12873T =JCM 14591T).

A Gram-negative, non-sporulating, non-flagellated rod, designated BR-9T, was isolated from soil collected on the Korean peninsula. Strain BR-9T grew optimally at pH 6.0–7.0, at 30 °C and in the absence of NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain BR-9T belonged to the genus Pedobacter and clustered with Pedobacter insulae DS-139T and Pedobacter koreensis WPCB189T. Strain BR-9T exhibited 98.2 and 97.5 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with P. insulae DS-139T and P. koreensis WPCB189T, respectively, and <96.7 % sequence similarity with the type strains of other species in the genus Pedobacter. Strain BR-9T contained MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content of strain BR-9T was 38.5 mol%. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain BR-9T and P. insulae DS-139T and P. koreensis KCTC 12536T was 3.4–4.2 %, which indicated that the isolate was genetically distinct from these type strains. Strain BR-9T was also distinguishable by differences in phenotypic properties. On the basis of the data presented, strain BR-9T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Pedobacter, for which the name Pedobacter boryungensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BR-9T ( = KCTC 23344T  = CCUG 60024T).

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming bacterial strain, BDR-9T, was isolated from soil collected from Boryung on the west coast of the Korean peninsula, and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic study. Strain BDR-9T grew optimally at 25 °C, at pH 6.0–7.5 and in the absence of NaCl. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain BDR-9T fell within the clade comprising species of the genus Mucilaginibacter within the phylum Bacteroidetes. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values between strain BDR-9T and the type strains of species of the genus Mucilaginibacter were in the range 94.0–95.6 %. Strain BDR-9T contained MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 44.3 mol%. Differential phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness of strain BDR-9T demonstrated that this strain is distinguishable from species of the genus Mucilaginibacter. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain BDR-9T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter, for which the name Mucilaginibacter boryungensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BDR-9T ( = KCTC 23157T  = CCUG 59599T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, Stenotrophomonas-like bacterial strain, DS-16T, was isolated from soil from Dokdo, Korea, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Strain DS-16T grew optimally at pH 6.0–7.0 and 30 °C in the presence of 0.5 % (w/v) NaCl. It contained Q-8 as the predominant ubiquinone and iso-C16 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 1 ω9c as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 65.1 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DS-16T joined the cluster comprising Stenotrophomonas species. The levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain DS-16T and the type strains of Stenotrophomonas species ranged from 95.5 to 97.5 %. DNA–DNA relatedness data and differential phenotypic properties, together with the phylogenetic distinctiveness of strain DS-16T, demonstrated that this novel strain differs from Stenotrophomonas species with validly published names. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genetic data, strain DS-16T (=KCTC 12543T=CIP 108839T) should be classified in the genus Stenotrophomonas as a member of a novel species, for which the name Stenotrophomonas dokdonensis sp. nov. is proposed.

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, Flavobacterium-like bacterial strain, DS-20T, was isolated from soil from the island of Dokdo, Korea, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Strain DS-20T grew optimally at pH 6.5–7.0 and 25 °C. It contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C17 : 1 ω9c as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 38.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DS-20T belonged to the genus Flavobacterium. Levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain DS-20T and the type strains of recognized Flavobacterium species were below 94.9 %. Strain DS-20T differed from phylogenetically related Flavobacterium species in several phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of its phenotypic and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain DS-20T was classified in the genus Flavobacterium as representing a novel species, for which the name Flavobacterium terrigena sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DS-20T (=KCTC 12761T=DSM 17934T).

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming and short rod- or rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated 22-5T, was isolated from a bluespotted cornetfish, Fistularia commersonii, and subjected to taxonomic study. Strain 22-5T grew optimally at 30 °C and in the presence of 2–5 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain 22-5T belonged to the genus Paracoccus and joined the cluster comprising Paracoccus homiensis DD-R11T and Paracoccus zeaxanthinifaciens ATCC 21588T, with which strain 22-5T exhibited 97.4 and 96.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, respectively. Strain 22-5T exhibited 94.0–96.6 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the other type strains of species of the genus Paracoccus. Strain 22-5T contained Q-10 as the predominant menaquinone and C18 : 1 ω7c as the predominant fatty acid. In this study, P. zeaxanthinifaciens KCTC 22688T also contained Q-10 as the predominant isoprenoid quinone. The DNA G+C content of strain 22-5T was 63.6 mol%. Strain 22-5T exhibited 44 and 32 % DNA–DNA relatedness to P. homiensis KACC 11518T and P. zeaxanthinifaciens KCTC 22688T, respectively. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genetic data, strain 22-5T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Paracoccus, for which the name Paracoccus fistulariae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 22-5T (=KCTC 22803T =CCUG 58401T).

Two Gram-negative, non-motile, pleomorphic bacterial strains, DS-40T and DS-45T, were isolated from a soil sample collected from Dokdo, Korea, and their exact taxonomic positions were investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strains DS-40T and DS-45T grew optimally at 25 °C and pH 6.5–7.5 in the presence of 0–1.0 % (w/v) NaCl. They contained MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone and possessed iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C contents of strains DS-40T and DS-45T were 36.0 and 36.8 mol%, respectively. Strains DS-40T and DS-45T shared a 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 96.7 % and demonstrated a mean DNA–DNA relatedness level of 12 %. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strains DS-40T and DS-45T were most closely phylogenetically affiliated with the genus Pedobacter of the family Sphingobacteriaceae. Strains DS-40T and DS-45T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 91.4–93.7 and 89.9–91.6 % with respect to the type strains of Pedobacter and Sphingobacterium species, respectively. Phenotypic and chemotaxonomic properties, together with the phylogenetic data, support the assignment of strains DS-40T and DS-45T as two distinct species within the genus Pedobacter. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genetic data, strains DS-40T and DS-45T represent two novel species of the genus Pedobacter, for which the names Pedobacter lentus sp. nov. and Pedobacter terricola sp. nov. are proposed, respectively. The respective type strains are DS-40T (=KCTC 12875T=JCM 14593T) and DS-45T (=KCTC 12876T=JCM 14594T).

Three Gram-positive-staining strains isolated from fermented stinky tofu brine were rod-shaped, non-motile, asporogenous, facultatively anaerobic, heterofermentative and did not exhibit catalase activity. Comparative analyses of 16S rRNA, rpoA and pheS gene sequences demonstrated that the novel strains were members of the genus Lactobacillus. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, the type strains of Lactobacillus collinoides (98.6 %), Lactobacillus paracollinoides (98.6 %) and Lactobacillus similis (99.6 %) were the closest neighbours. However, DNA–DNA reassociation values with these strains were less than 10 %. The phenotypic and genotypic features demonstrated that these isolates represent a novel species of the genus Lactobacillus, for which the name Lactobacillus odoratitofui sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YIT 11304T (=JCM 15043T =BCRC 17810T =DSM 19909T).

A Gram-positive, non-motile and rod- or coccoid-shaped bacterial strain, MDN22T, was isolated from a soil sample from Korea. Strain MDN22T grew optimally at pH 7.0–8.0, at 30 °C and in the presence of 0–0.5 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain MDN22T was phylogenetically most closely related to the genera Nocardioides and Marmoricola. In the neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree, strain MDN22T was most closely related to Nocardioides jensenii KCTC 9134T, with which it exhibited 98.3 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. The strain exhibited 93.1–96.9 % and 95.3–95.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to the type strains of other species of the genera Nocardioides and Marmoricola, respectively. The chemotaxonomic properties of strain MDN22T were consistent with those of the genus Nocardioides; the cell-wall peptidoglycan type was based on ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid, the predominant menaquinone was MK-8(H4) and the major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0 and C17 : 1. The DNA G+C content was 68.7 mol%. DNA–DNA relatedness data and differential phenotypic properties suggested that strain MDN22T could be differentiated from N. jensenii and Nocardioides dubius. On the basis of the data obtained, strain MDN22T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Nocardioides, for which the name Nocardioides daedukensis sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is MDN22T (=KCTC 19601T=CCUG 57505T).

Strain K105T grew optimally at pH 6.5–7.5 and 30–37 °C. It contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 1 ω9c, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 36.8 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain K105T belonged to the genus Chryseobacterium. Strain K105T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of less than 96.9 % to the type strains of recognized Chryseobacterium species. Strain K105T differed from phylogenetically related Chryseobacterium species in several phenotypic properties. On the basis of phenotypic and phylogenetic data, strain K105T (=KCTC 12841T=JCM 14362T) is placed in the genus Chryseobacterium as the type strain of a novel species, for which the name Chryseobacterium daeguense sp. nov. is proposed.

Strain DS-18T grew optimally at pH 6.5–7.0 and 25 °C without NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DS-18T belonged to the genus Brevundimonas. Strain DS-18T contained Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and C18 : 1 ω7c and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 68.7 mol%. Strain DS-18T exhibited levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 96.3–98.7 % to the type strains of Brevundimonas species and Mycoplana bullata. Mean DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain DS-18T and the type strains of phylogenetically related Brevundimonas species and M. bullata were in the range 15–32 %. Strain DS-18T differed from Brevundimonas species and M. bullata in several phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genetic data, strain DS-18T represents a novel species of the genus Brevundimonas, for which the name Brevundimonas lenta sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DS-18T (=KCTC 12871T =JCM 14602T).
