Two Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped and endospore-forming bacteria, designated WM-1T and WM-4, were isolated from a paddy soil and a forest soil, respectively, in South China. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses showed that both strains were members of the genus Oceanobacillus and most closely related to Oceanobacillus chironomi LMG 23627T with pairwise sequence similarity of 96.0 %. The isolates contained menaquinone-7 (MK-7) as the respiratory quinone and anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0 as the major fatty acids (>10 %). Polar lipids consisted of a predominance of diphosphatidylglycerol and moderate to minor amounts of phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The DNA G+C content was 38.6–39.2 mol%. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain WM-1T displayed 99.7 % similarity to that of strain WM-4, and DNA–DNA hybridization between the two strains showed a relatedness value of 91 %. Based on the results of this polyphasic study, strains WM-1T and WM-4 represent a novel species in the genus Oceanobacillus , for which the name Oceanobacillus luteolus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is WM-1T ( = KCTC 33119T = CGMCC 1.12406T).

A straight-chain, spore-forming actinobacterium, strain YIM 120770T, was isolated from soil. Phylogenetic analysis on the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons revealed that the isolate represents a distinct cluster within the clade comprising the genus Nonomuraea and is related most closely to Nonomuraea rhizophila YIM 67092T (96.5 % similarity). Cells of strain YIM 120770T grew in the presence of 0–3 % (w/v) NaCl, at 15–37 °C and at pH 7.0–8.0. The diagnostic amino acid was meso-diaminopimelic acid, cell hydrolysates contained madurose, glucose, mannose, ribose and galactose, the predominant cellular fatty acids were 10-methyl C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0, and the DNA G+C content was 66.4 mol%, data consistent with affiliation of strain YIM 120770T to the genus Nonomuraea . Strain YIM 120770T shared low levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (<97 %) with the type strains of recognized species of the genus Nonomuraea and could be differentiated from its closest phylogenetic relative based on phenotypic characteristics. These results suggested that strain YIM 120770T represents a novel species of the genus Nonomuraea , for which the name Nonomuraea soli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YIM 120770T ( = DSM 45533T = JCM 17347T).

A novel actinomycete strain, designated TRM 45387T, was isolated from a saline-alkali soil in Xinjiang Province (40° 22′ N 79° 08′ E), north-west China. The isolate was characterized using a polyphasic approach. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain TRM 45387T belonged to the genus Glycomyces and was closely related to Glycomyces arizonensis DSM 44726T (96.59 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). The G+C content of the DNA was 71.26 mol%. The isolate contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid, and xylose, glucose, galactose, arabinose and ribose as the major whole-cell sugars. The diagnostic phospholipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylinositolmannosides. The predominant menaquinone was MK-10(H6). The major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. On the basis of the evidence from this polyphasic study, a novel species, Glycomyces tarimensis sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain of Glycomyces tarimensis is TRM 45387T ( = CCTCC AA 2014007T = JCM 30184T).

A Gram-stain-positive, spore-forming, aerobic and filamentous thermoactinomycete, designated GD02T, was isolated from soil in south China. The isolate could grow in the presence of 0–3.0 % NaCl (w/v), at temperatures of 30–60 °C and at pH 5.5–9.5, forming ivory-coloured colonies. When the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the isolate was compared with those of other bacteria, the highest similarity was observed with Kroppenstedtia eburnea DSM 45196T (96.1 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 56.3 mol%, the cell-wall peptidoglycan contained ll-diaminopimelic acid, the main polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylmethylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol, and the major menaquinone was MK-7. The major cellular fatty acids (>5 %) were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. On the basis of its phenotypic and phylogenetic properties, chemotaxonomic analysis and the results of physiological and biochemical tests, strain GD02T ( = CGMCC 1.12404T = KCTC 29149T) was designated the type strain of a novel species of the genus Kroppenstedtia , for which the name Kroppenstedtia guangzhouensis sp. nov. is proposed.

Strains LMG 27428T and LMG 27427 were isolated from the caecal content of a chicken and produced butyric, lactic and formic acids as major metabolic end products. The genomic DNA G+C contents of strains LMG 27428T and LMG 27427 were 40.4 and 38.8 mol%. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, both strains were most closely related to the generically misclassified Streptococcus pleomorphus ATCC 29734T. Strain LMG 27428T could be distinguished from S. pleomorphus ATCC 29734T based on production of more lactic acid and less formic acid in M2GSC medium, a higher DNA G+C content and the absence of activities of acid phosphatase and leucine, arginine, leucyl glycine, pyroglutamic acid, glycine and histidine arylamidases, while strain LMG 27428 was biochemically indistinguishable from S. pleomorphus ATCC 29734T. The novel genus Faecalicoccus gen. nov. within the family Erysipelotrichaceae is proposed to accommodate strains LMG 27428T and LMG 27427. Strain LMG 27428T ( = DSM 26963T) is the type strain of Faecalicoccus acidiformans sp. nov., and strain LMG 27427 ( = DSM 26962) is a strain of Faecalicoccus pleomorphus comb. nov. (type strain LMG 17756T = ATCC 29734T = DSM 20574T). Furthermore, the nearest phylogenetic neighbours of the genus Faecalicoccus are the generically misclassified Eubacterium cylindroides DSM 3983T (94.4 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to strain LMG 27428T) and Eubacterium biforme DSM 3989T (92.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to strain LMG 27428T). We present genotypic and phenotypic data that allow the differentiation of each of these taxa and propose to reclassify these generically misnamed species of the genus Eubacterium formally as Faecalitalea cylindroides gen. nov., comb. nov. and Holdemanella biformis gen. nov., comb. nov., respectively. The type strain of Faecalitalea cylindroides is DSM 3983T = ATCC 27803T = JCM 10261T and that of Holdemanella biformis is DSM 3989T = ATCC 27806T = CCUG 28091T.

A novel actinomycete, designated strain NEAU-TCZ24T, was isolated from soil and characterized using a polyphasic approach. The results of phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that the organism should be assigned to the genus Cellulomonas and formed a stable clade with its closest relatives Cellulomonas terrae JCM 14899T (98.4 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Cellulomonas xylanilytica JCM 14281T (97.9 %) and Cellulomonas humilata JCM 11945T (97.7 %). The major menaquinones were identified as MK-9(H4) and MK-8(H4). The phospholipid profile was found to contain diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositolmannoside, a ninhydrin-positiveglycolipid, an unidentified phosphoglycolipid, an unidentified phospholipid and an unidentified lipid. The major fatty acids were identified as anteiso-C15 : 0, C18 : 1ω9c, C16 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. Moreover, morphological and chemotaxonomic properties of NEAU-TCZ24T also confirmed the affiliation of the isolate to the genus Cellulomonas . However, multilocus sequence analysis based on five other house-keeping genes (gyrB, rpoB, recA, relA and atpD), DNA–DNA relatedness, physiological and biochemical data indicated that NEAU-TCZ24T could be distinguished from its closest relatives. Therefore, it is proposed that NEAU-TCZ24T represents a novel species of the genus Cellulomonas , for which the name Cellulomonas rhizosphaerae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NEAU-TCZ24T (=CCTCC AA 2018042T=JCM 32383T).

An obligately anaerobic, non-motile, Gram-negative and rod-shaped strain (AGMB03916T) was isolated from faeces of a 2-week-old piglet raised at the National Institute of Animal Science in Wanju, Republic of Korea. Growth of strain AGMB03916T occurred at 30–45 °C (optimum, 37 °C), at pH 6–9 (optimum, pH 8) and in the presence of 0.5–1.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Based on the results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses, strain AGMB03916T was closely related to two validly published species of the genus Phocaeicola , Phocaeicola plebeius and Phocaeicola coprocola . The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of strain AGMB03916T compared to P. plebeius M12T (=KCTC 5793T) and P. coprocola M16T (=KCTC 5443T) were 96.3 and 95.0 %, respectively. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain AGMB03916T was 46.4 mol%. The average nucleotide identity values between strain AGMB03916T and the reference strains were 74.9–78.5 %. Cells were able to utilize d-glucose, lactose, sucrose, maltose, salicin, aesculin hydrolysis, cellobiose and raffinose. The major end product of metabolism was acetate. The major cellular fatty acids (>10 %) of the isolate were iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0, C16 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 11 (iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and/or C18 : 2 DMA). On the basis of the genotypic, biochemical, chemotaxonomic, phenotypic and phylogenetic data, strain AGMB03916T represents a novel species of the genus Phocaeicola , for which the name Phocaeicola faecicola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is AGMB03916T (=KCTC 25014T=GDMCC 1.2574T).

A Gram-staining-positive, aerobic organism, isolated from the Red Sea sponge Spheciospongia vagabunda was investigated to determine its taxonomic position. On the basis of results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis strain EG49T was most closely related to Actinokineospora cibodasensis and Actinokineospora baliensis (both 97.3 % similarity) and Actinokineospora diospyrosa and Actinokineospora auranticolor (both 97.0 % similarity). The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to all other species of the genus Actinokineospora was <97.0 %. The quinone system of strain EG49T contained the menaquinones MK-9(H4) (47 %), MK-9(H6) (27 %) and MK-9(H2) (15 %) in major amounts. Minor amounts of MK-7(H4) (2 %), MK-9(H0) (1 %), MK-9(H8) (3 %) and MK-10(H4) (3 %) were detected as well in addition to MK-8(H4), MK-8(H6), MK-10(H2) and MK-10(H6) (all <1 %). The diagnostic diamino acid of the peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. In the polar lipid profile, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and hydroxyphosphatidylethanolamine were predominant. Phosphatidylinositol-mannoside, two unidentified phospholipids and two glycoglipids as well as one aminoglycolipid, one aminolipid and one unidentified lipid were found in addition. The fatty acid profile was composed of mainly iso-branched fatty acids: iso-C16 : 0, iso-C14 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 1H. All these findings clearly supported the classification of the strain as representing a member of the genus Actinokineospora . In addition, the results of physiological and biochemical tests also allowed phenotypic differentiation of strain EG49T from the most closely related species of the genus Actinokineospora . Strain EG49T represents a novel species of the genus Actinokineospora , for which we propose the name Actinokineospora spheciospongiae sp. nov., with strain EG49T ( = DSM 45935T = CCM 8480T = LMG 27700T) as the type strain.

A Gram-staining-negative, non-motile, spore-forming, rod-shaped, marine bacterial strain, CL-KR2T, was isolated from tropical seawater near Kosrae, an island in the Federated States of Micronesia. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain CL-KR2T revealed a clear affiliation with the genus Gracilimonas . Based on phylogenetic analysis, strain CL-KR2T showed the closest phylogenetic relationship to Gracilimonas tropica CL-CB462T, with 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 96.6 %. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain CL-KR2T and G. tropica CL-CB462T was 6.7 % (reciprocal 9.5 %). Strain CL-KR2T grew in the presence of 1–20 % sea salts and the optimal salt concentration was 3.5–5 %. The temperature and pH optima for growth were 35 °C and pH 7.5. The major cellular fatty acids (≥10.0 %) of strain CL-KR2T were iso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c) and iso-C17 : 1ω9c and the only isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified phospholipid, two unidentified glycolipids and two unidentified lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain CL-KR2T was 43.2 mol%. The combined phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data showed that strain CL-KR2T could be distinguished from the only member of the genus Gracilimonas with a validly published name. Thus, strain CL-KR2T should be assigned to a novel species in the genus Gracilimonas , for which the name Gracilimonas rosea sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CL-KR2T ( = KCCM 90206T = JCM 18898T).

A Gram-staining-positive, non-motile, aerobic, non-spore-forming and short rod-shaped bacterial strain, PAMC 26527T, was isolated from biofilm formed in coastal seawater of the Norwegian Sea. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain PAMC 26527T revealed a clear affiliation with the genus Nocardioides . Based on phylogenetic analysis, strain PAMC 26527T showed the closest phylogenetic relationship with Nocardioides caricicola YC6903T with 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 96.3 %. Strain PAMC 26527T grew in the presence of 0–5.0 % sea salts. The optimum temperature and pH for growth were 20 °C and pH 7.5. The major cellular fatty acids of strain PAMC 26527T were iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1ω8c and C18 : 1ω9c and the major isoprenoid quinone was MK-8(H4). Cell-wall analysis showed that strain PAMC 26527T contained ll-diaminopimelic acid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 69.3 mol%. The combined phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data showed that strain PAMC 26527T could be clearly distinguished from recognized members of the genus Nocardioides . Thus, strain PAMC 26527T should be classified as representing a novel species in the genus Nocardioides , for which the name Nocardioides salsibiostraticola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is PAMC 26527T ( = KCTC 29158T = JCM 18743T).

The taxonomic position of a novel actinomycete isolated from soil in Fars Province (Iran) was determined using a polyphasic approach. Phenotypic characterization and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of the isolate matched those described for members of the genus Streptomyces . On ISP2 medium, strain HM 1154T produced a dark cream, branched substrate mycelium and Retinaculiaperti aerial hyphae that in some images also appeared spiral and that developed into greyish-white spore chains with a smooth surface. The isolate showed optimal growth at 28 °C and pH 6–9 with 0–4 % (w/v) NaCl. Whole-cell hydrolysates contained ll-diaminopimelic acid as diagnostic diamino acid, ribose and glucose. The main phospholipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, three unknown phospholipids and an unknown aminophospholipid; MK-9(H4) and MK-9(H2) were the predominant menaquinones. The major cellular fatty acids were the branched saturated iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. Strain HM 1154T exhibited the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to Streptomyces coerulescens DSM 40146T (99.4 %), Streptomyces varsoviensis DSM 40346T (99.3 %), Streptomyces youssoufiensis DSM 41920T (99.2 %), Streptomyces abikoensis DSM 40831T (99.2 %), Streptomyces rimosus subsp. rimosus DSM 40260T (99.1 %), Streptomyces luteireticuli DSM 40509T (99.1 %), Streptomyces thioluteus DSM 40027T (99.1 %), Streptomyces blastmyceticus DSM 40029T (99.0 %) and Streptomyces hiroshimensis DSM 40037T (99.0 %). DNA–DNA hybridization studies showed relatedness values of 11.0–35.8 % with the closest related species. Based on these results, strain HM 1154T is considered to represent a novel species within the genus Streptomyces , for which the name Streptomyces zagrosensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HM 1154T ( = DSM 42018T = UTMC 1154T = CECT 8305T).
