Strain 39ET, originally characterized as Clostridium thermohydrosulfuricum strain 39E and later renamed as Thermoanaerobacter ethanolicus strain 39E, shows less than 97 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the type strain of the type species of the genus Thermoanaerobacter, T. ethanolicus strain JW 200T. On the basis of a polyphasic analysis that included DNA–DNA hybridization studies with the subspecies of Thermoanaerobacter brockii, its closest phylogenetic relatives, strain 39ET represents a novel species of the genus Thermoanaerobacter, for which the name Thermoanaerobacter pseudethanolicus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 39ET (=DSM 2355T=ATCC 33223T).

A novel, moderately halophilic bacterium belonging to the genus Salinicoccus was isolated from crabs preserved in soy sauce: a traditional Korean fermented seafood. Colonies of strain CrmT were ivory and the cells were non-motile, Gram-positive cocci. The organism was non-sporulating, catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. The major fatty acids of strain CrmT were iso-C15 : 0 (22.0 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (40.6 %) and anteiso-C17 : 0 (12.1 %). The cell wall peptidoglycan contained lysine and glycine, and the major isoprenoid quinone was MK-6. The polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified glycolipid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 47.8 mol%. Strain CrmT was closely related to the type strain of Salinicoccus halodurans, with which it shared 96.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. The DNA–DNA hybridization value between strains CrmT and S. halodurans DSM 19336T was 7.6 %. Based on phenotypic, genetic and phylogenetic data, strain CrmT should be classified as a novel species within the genus Salinicoccus, for which the name Salinicoccus carnicancri sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CrmT (=KCTC 13301T =JCM 15796T).

Two novel species belonging to the genus Shewanella are described on the basis of a polyphasic taxonomic approach. A total of 40 strains of Gram-negative, psychrotolerant, H2S-producing bacteria were isolated from marine fish (cod and plaice) caught in the Baltic Sea off Denmark. Strains belonging to group 1 (seven strains) were a lactate-assimilating variant of Shewanella morhuae with a G+C content of 44 mol%. The strains of group 2 (33 strains) utilized lactate, N-acetylglucosamine and malate but did not produce DNase or ornithine decarboxylase. Their G+C content was 47 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence data placed the two novel species within the genus Shewanella. Group 1 showed greatest sequence similarity with S. morhuae ATCC BAA-1205T (99.9 %). However, gyrB gene sequence analysis and DNA–DNA hybridization differentiated these isolates from S. morhuae, with 95.6 % sequence similarity and less than 57 % DNA relatedness, respectively. Group 2 strains shared more than 99 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the type strains of Shewanella colwelliana and Shewanella affinis, but gyrB sequence similarity (~85 %) and the results of DNA hybridization (~28 %) indicated that the new isolates represented a novel species. Furthermore, when compared to each other, the type strains of S. colwelliana and S. affinis had almost identical gyrB sequences and significantly high DNA reassociation values (76–83 %), indicating that they belonged to the same species. Based on the conclusions of this study, we propose the novel species Shewanella glacialipiscicola sp. nov. (type strain T147T=LMG 23744T=NBRC 102030T) for group 1 strains and Shewanella algidipiscicola sp. nov. (type strain S13T=LMG 23746T=NBRC 102032T) for group 2 strains, and we propose that Shewanella affinis as a later heterotypic synonym of Shewanella colwelliana.

A novel actinomycete, designated HM 537T, was isolated from soil in Hamedan Province, Iran. Cell-wall hydrolysates of strain HM 537T contained meso-diaminopimelic acid, and whole-cell hydrolysates contained ribose, glucose, galactose, rhamnose and traces of mannose. The main phospholipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, hydroxyphosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and an unknown phospholipid. MK-9(H4), an unknown MK and MK-10(H4) were the predominant menaquinones. The major fatty acids included iso-C16 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 1 G and 9(?)-methyl C16 : 0. Strain HM 537T had the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Saccharothrix hoggarensis DSM 45457T (99.5 %) and Saccharothrix saharensis DSM 45456T (99.0 %). DNA–DNA hybridization studies showed relatedness values of 13.8 ± 3.3 % with S. hoggarensis DSM 45457T and 16.3 ± 3.5 % with S. saharensis DSM 45456T. Based on the results of phenotypic and genotypic studies, strain HM 537T represents a novel species of the genus Saccharothrix, for which the name Saccharothrix ecbatanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HM 537T ( = DSM 45486T = UTMC 00537T = CCUG 63021T).

A novel, Gram-positive, non-motile, endospore-forming and moderately halophilic bacterium, strain GrbiT, was isolated from a traditional Korean fermented seafood. The organism grew optimally in the presence of 10–15 % NaCl, at 37 °C and pH 8.0. The peptidoglycan of the cell wall consisted of meso-diaminopimelic acid, and the predominant menaquinone was MK-7. The major fatty acids of strain GrbiT were iso-C16 : 0 (36.4 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (30.3 %) and iso-C14 : 0 (18.2 %). The polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified glycolipid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 42.5 mol%. Strain GrbiT was most closely related to the type strain Lentibacillus kapialis JCM 12580T, with which it shared 97.5 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. The DNA–DNA hybridization value between strains GrbiT and L. kapialis JCM 12580T was 8 %. Based on phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic data, strain GrbiT should be classified as a novel species within the genus Lentibacillus, for which the name Lentibacillus jeotgali sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GrbiT (=KCTC 13300T=JCM 15795T).

Polyphasic analysis of five new Vibrio isolates originating from the haemolymph of diseased cultured oysters is described. The new isolates were closely related to Vibrio splendidus, having 98 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. gyrB phylogenetic analysis, fluorescent amplified-fragment length polymorphism (FAFLP) fingerprinting and DNA–DNA hybridization experiments clearly showed that the new isolates form a tight genomic group that is different from the currently known Vibrio species. It is proposed to accommodate these isolates in a novel species, Vibrio crassostreae sp. nov. (type strain LGP 7T=LMG 22240T=CIP 108327T). Phenotypic and chemotaxonomic features that differentiate V. crassostreae from other known Vibrio species include arginine dihydrolase, utilization and fermentation of various carbon sources, β-galactosidase activity, NO2 production and the presence of the fatty acids 14 : 0 iso and 16 : 0 iso.

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, phototrophic bacterium (JA181T) was isolated from a tidal water sample. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, strain JA181T was shown to belong to the class Alphaproteobacteria, most closely related to Rhodovulum sulfidophilum (97.8 % similarity to the type strain), Rhodovulum adriaticum (93 %), Rhodovulum robiginosum (93 %), Rhodovulum iodosum (94 %), Rhodovulum imhoffii (94 %), Rhodovulum strictum (95 %), Rhodovulum euryhalinum (94.6 %) and Rhodovulum marinum (94.6 %). DNA–DNA hybridization with Rdv. sulfidophilum DSM 1374T (relatedness of 39 % with strain JA181T) and physiological and biochemical tests allowed genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of strain JA181T from the eight Rhodovulum species with validly published names. Strain JA181T therefore represents a novel species, for which the name Rhodovulum visakhapatnamense sp. nov. is proposed (type strain JA181T =JCM 13531T =ATCC BAA-1274T =DSM 17937T).

Two coryneform bacteria were isolated from a penguin rookery soil sample collected in Antarctica, near the Indian station Dakshin Gangotri (strain Lz1yT), and from sea water from Kerguelen island, Antarctica (strain KGN15T). They have morphological and chemotaxonomic properties (peptidoglycan A4α type; major menaquinones MK-8, MK-9 and MK-10; predominant fatty acids anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0) that are characteristic of members of the genus Arthrobacter. The isolates shared 97·8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to each other and were most closely related to Arthrobacter sulfureus (about 98·5 % sequence similarity). DNA–DNA hybridization experiments revealed 50 % relatedness between the isolates, while the levels of DNA–DNA relatedness between strains Lz1yT and KGN15 T and their phylogenetic relative, A. sulfureus, were respectively 54 and 12 %. Based on the above data and distinct phenotypic differences between the isolates and A. sulfureus, two novel species are proposed, Arthrobacter gangotriensis sp. nov. (type strain Lz1yT=DSM 15796T=JCM 12166T) and Arthrobacter kerguelensis sp. nov. (type strain KGN15T=DSM 15797T=JCM 12165T).

A novel aerobic actinomycete, designated HA11110T, was isolated from a mangrove soil sample collected in Haikou, China. It formed white aerial mycelium and pale yellow substrate mycelium on Gause's synthetic agar no. 1. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that cells of HA11110T produced straight to spiral spore chains with spiny spores. Chemotaxonomic tests showed that the cell wall contained ll-diaminopimelic acid and the major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C14 : 0.16S rRNA gene sequence similarity showed that strain HA11110T belonged to the genus Streptomyces, most closely related to Streptomyces fenghuangensis GIMN4.003T (99.1 %), Streptomyces nanhaiensis SCSIO 01248T (98.8 %) and Streptomyces radiopugnans R97T (98.8 %). However, DNA–DNA hybridization studies of strain HA11110T with these three closest relatives showed relatedness values of 58.4, 49.7 and 47.2 %, respectively. On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic data, strain HA11110T represents a novel species of the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces mangrovi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HA11110T ( = CGMCC 4.7117T = DSM 42113T).

The 16S Rrna Gene

A Gram-stain-positive, endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium, designated XJ259T, was isolated from a cold spring sample from Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. The isolate grew optimally at 20–30 °C and pH 7.3–7.8. Comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that isolate XJ259T belonged phylogenetically to the genus Paenibacillus, and was most closely related to Paenibacillus xinjiangensis B538T (with 96.6 % sequence similarity), Paenibacillus glycanilyticus DS-1T (96.3 %) and Paenibacillus castaneae Ch-32T (96.1 %), sharing less than 96.0 % sequence similarity with all other members of the genus Paenibacillus. Chemotaxonomic analysis revealing menaquinone-7 (MK-7) as the major isoprenoid quinone, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and two unknown phosphoglycolipids as the major cellular polar lipids, a DNA G+C content of 47.0 mol%, and anteiso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids supported affiliation of the new isolate to the genus Paenibacillus. Based on these data, isolate XJ259T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus algorifonticola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is XJ259T ( = CGMCC 1.10223T  = JCM 16598T).

Two Gram-stain-positive bacterial isolates, strain 2385/12T and strain 2673/12T were isolated from a tapir and a dog's nose, respectively. The two strains were rod to coccoid-shaped, catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. The highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity identified Corynebacterium singulare CCUG 37330T (96.3 % similarity) as the nearest relative of strain 2385/12T and suggested the isolate represented a novel species. Corynebacterium humireducens DSM 45392T (98.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) was identified as the nearest relative of strain 2673/12T. Results from DNA–DNA hybridization with the type strain of C. humireducens demonstrated that strain 2673/12T also represented a novel species. Strain 2385/12T showed a quinone system consisting predominantly of menaquinones MK-8(H2) and MK-9(H2) whereas strain 2673/12T contained only MK-8(H2) as predominant quinone. The polar lipid profiles of the two strains showed the major compounds phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified glycolipid. Phosphatidylinositol was identified as another major lipid in 2673/12T whereas it was only found in moderate amounts in strain 2385/12T. Furthermore, moderate to minor amounts of phosphatidylinositol-mannoside, β-gentiobiosyl diacylglycerol and variable counts of several unidentified lipids were detected in the two strains. Both strains contained corynemycolic acids. The polyamine patterns were characterized by the major compound putrescine in strain 2385/12T and spermidine in strain 2673/12T. In the fatty acid profiles, predominantly C18 : 1ω9c and C16 : 0 were detected. The two strains are distinguishable from each other and the nearest related established species of the genus Corynebacterium phylogenetically and phenotypically. In conclusion, two novel species of the genus Corynebacterium are proposed, namely Corynebacterium tapiri sp. nov. (type strain, 2385/12T = CCUG 65456T = LMG 28165T) and Corynebacterium nasicanis sp. nov. (type strain, 2673/12T = CCUG 65455T = LMG 28166T).
