Two ascomycetous yeast species, Candida flosculorum sp. nov. and Candida floris sp. nov., were isolated from tropical flowers and their associated insects. C. flosculorum was isolated from flower bracts of Heliconia velloziana and Heliconia episcopalis (Heliconiaceae) collected from two Atlantic rain forest sites in Brazil. C. floris was isolated from flowers of Ipomoea sp. (Convolvulaceae) growing on the banks of the river Paraguai in the pantanal ecosystem in Brazil and from an adult of the stingless bee Trigona sp. and a flower of Merremia quinquefolia (Convolvulaceae) in Costa Rica. C. flosculorum belongs to the Metschnikowiaceae clade and C. floris belongs to the Starmerella clade. The type strain of C. flosculorum is UFMG-JL13T (=CBS 10566T=NRRL Y-48258T) and the type strain of C. floris is UWO(PS) 00-226.2T (=CBS 10593T=NRRL Y-48255T).

In the course of an on-going study aimed at cataloguing the natural yeast biodiversity found in Ecuador, two strains (CLQCA 13-025 and CLQCA 20-004T) were isolated from samples of cow manure and rotten wood collected in two separate provinces of the country (Orellana and Bolívar). These strains were found to represent a novel yeast species based on the sequences of their D1/D2 domain of the large-subunit (LSU) rRNA gene and their physiological characteristics. Phylogenetic analysis based on LSU D1/D2 sequences revealed this novel species to belong to the Metschnikowia clade and to be most closely related to Candida suratensis, a species recently discovered in a mangrove forest in Thailand. The species name of Candida ecuadorensis sp. nov. is proposed to accommodate these strains, with strain CLQCA 20-004T ( = CBS 12653T = NCYC 3782T) designated as the type strain.

The new methanol-assimilating yeast species Komagataella phaffii Kurtzman sp. nov. (type strain NRRL Y-7556T=CBS 2612T) is described. Of the four known strains of this species, two were isolated from black oak trees in California, USA, one from an Emory oak in Arizona, USA, and one from an unidentified source in Mexico. The species forms hat-shaped ascospores in deliquescent asci and appears to be homothallic. Analysis of nucleotide sequences from domains D1/D2 of large-subunit (26S) rDNA separates the new species from Komagataella pastoris, the type species of the genus, and from Pichia pseudopastoris, which is here renamed Komagataella pseudopastoris (Dlauchy, Tornai-Lehoczki, Fülöp & Péter) Kurtzman comb. nov. (type strain NRRL Y-27603T=CBS 9187T=NCAIM Y 01541T). On the basis of D1/D2 26S rDNA sequence analysis, the three species now assigned to the genus Komagataella represent a clade that is phylogenetically isolated from other ascomycetous yeast genera.

The distribution and diversity of yeast species vectored by and from the crop of eight species groups of Drosophila is described for two rain forest sites and an urban wooded area in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The typical forest Drosophila groups guarani, tripunctata, and willistoni showed a higher diversity of yeasts than the cosmopolitan melanogaster species group, suggesting different strategies of utilization of substrates. Apiculate yeasts, including Kloeckera apis, Kloeckera javanica, and Kloeckera japonica, were the prevalent species. Geotrichum spp. and Candida citrea were also frequent isolates in the forest sites. Similarities between the yeasts from the external surfaces and crops of Drosophila suggested that the feeding substrates were the main source of the yeasts vectored by these flies. Most of the yeasts were strong fermenters and assimilated few compounds, usually sucrose, cellobiose, and glycerol. This indicated a preference of the flies for food sources such as fruits. Some yeasts were primarily isolated from one group of Drosophila; for example, Kloeckera javanica from the melanogaster group, Debaryomyces vanrijiae var. yarrowii from the tripunctata group, and Kluyveromyces delphensis from the willistoni group. These associations and differences in the yeast communities among the fly groups suggested a differentiation of diets and specialization of the yeast-Drosophila association in the tropical forests. Thirteen strains of yeasts were isolated from ambrosia beetle galleries at several sites in Japan. Based on the morphological and biochemical characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene of the yeasts, 10 strains were shown to represent a novel species of the genus Wickerhamomyces, described as Wickerhamomyces scolytoplatypi sp. nov. (type strain NBRC 11029T = CBS 12186T), and were closely related to Wickerhamomyces hampshirensis. The three other strains represented a novel species of the genus Cyberlindnera, described as Cyberlindnera xylebori sp. nov. (type strain NBRC 11048T = CBS 12187T), and were closely related to Cyberlindnera euphorbiiphila. It is suggested that these species are associated with ambrosia beetles and we consider ambrosia beetle galleries as good sources of novel yeasts.

Eight strains of a novel yeast species were isolated from tree saps of ‘Coihue’ (Nothofagus dombeyi, Nothofagaceae) and glacial meltwater (Castaño Overo River) in the Nahuel Huapi National Park, Patagonia, Argentina. The sequences of the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit of the rRNA gene showed that this novel yeast species belongs to the Wickerhamomyces genus (Order Saccharomycetales, Family Wickerhamomycetaceae). The closest related species were Candida ponderosae and Wickerhamomyces chambardii. Wickerhamomyces patagonicus sp. nov. is proposed to accommodate these novel strains, with the type strain CRUB 1724T (=CBS 11398T =JCM 16381T).

In an investigation of the yeast biota involved in silage deterioration, a considerable number of strains belonging to Saccharomyces and related genera were isolated from aerobically deteriorating corn silage in Tochigi, Japan. Analysis of sequences of the internal transcribed spacer and the large-subunit rRNA gene D1/D2 domain and electrophoretic karyotyping indicated that two of the strains, NS 14T and NS 26, represent a novel species with close phylogenetic relationships to Kazachstania servazzii and Kazachstania unispora. It is proposed that the novel species be named Kazachstania aerobia sp. nov., with NS 14T (=AS 2.2384T=CBS 9918T) as the type strain.

During a study of newly isolated yeast strains utilizing d-xylose as sole carbon source, eight strains, isolated from decayed wood, were found to represent two novel anamorphic, ascomycetous yeast species based on sequence analysis of the 26S rDNA D1/D2 domain and internal transcribed spacer region, and phenotypic characterization. The names Candida laoshanensis sp. nov. (type strain MLRW 6-2T=AS 2.4030T=CBS 11389T) and Candida qingdaonensis sp. nov. (type strain MLRW 7-1T=AS 2.4031T=CBS 11390T) are proposed for these two novel species; the closest relatives of the two novel species are Candida pomicola and Candida marilandica, respectively.

Among ascomycetous yeasts that were isolated from several nature reserve areas in China, three anamorphic strains isolated from soil (QL 5-5T) and fruit (QL 21-2T and SN 15-1T) were revealed, by conventional characterization and molecular phylogenetic analysis based on internal transcribed spacer and large subunit (26S) rRNA gene D1/D2 region sequencing, to represent three novel species in the genus Candida. Candida qinlingensis sp. nov. (type strain, QL 5-5T=AS 2.2524T=CBS 9768T) was related closely to a teleomorphic species, Williopsis pratensis. The close relatives of Candida diospyri sp. nov. (type strain, QL 21-2T=AS 2.2525T=CBS 9769T) are Candida friedrichii and Candida membranifaciens. Candida asparagi sp. nov. (type strain, SN 15-1T=AS 2.2526T=CBS 9770T) forms a clade with Candida fructus.
