Abstract In this work, the crystal structure and (RMSD) root-mean-square displacement of atoms in new cubic refractory interstitial alloys Ti0.74Mo0.26C and Ti0.70Mo0.30C were determined by neutron diffraction. These alloys are obtained by powder metallurgy by sintering fine powders of cubic titanium carbides TiC and molybdenum MoC. The values of the RMSD of atoms in these alloys, obtained by the methods of least squares and full-profile analysis from the neutron diffraction data, turned out to be identical. They turned out to be much larger than in the stoichiometric TiC alloy, which has a similar cubic structure and close geometric parameters of atoms with the Ti0.74Mo0.26C and Ti0.70Mo0.30C alloys. These alloys were explained by the occurrence of large static distortions in the lattice of the Ti0.70Mo0.30C alloy due to the differences in the masses and atomic radii of the titanium and molybdenum elements.

The US code of Federal Regulations mandates regular inspection of centrifugally cast austenitic stainless steel pipe, commonly used in primary cooling loops in light-water nuclear power plants. These pipes typically have a wall thickness of ~8 cm. Unfortunately, inspection using conventional ultrasonic techniques is not reliable as the microstructure strongly attenuates ultrasonic waves. Work is ongoing to simulate the behavior of acoustic waves in this microstructure and ultimately develop an acoustic inspection method for reactor inspections. In order to account for elastic anisotropy in the material, the texture in the steel was measured as a function of radial distance though the pipe wall. Experiments were conducted on two 10 × 12.7 × 80 mm radial sections of a cast pipe using neutron diffraction scans of 2 mm slices using the HIPPO time-of-flight neutron diffractometer at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE, Los Alamos, NM, USA). Strong textures dominated by a small number of austenite grains with their (100) direction aligned in the radial direction of the pipe were observed. ODF analysis indicated that up to 70% of the probed volume was occupied by just three single-grain orientations, consistent with grain sizes of almost 1 cm. Texture and phase fraction of both ferrite and austenite phases were measured along the length of the samples. These results will inform the development of a more robust diagnostic tool for regular inspection of this material.

In this research, the Y123 (YBa2Cu3Ox) and Y134 (YBa3Cu4Ox) superconductors were synthesized by solid state reaction and melt process, respectively. The crystal structure of all the samples were then determined using the Rietveld full-profile analysis method to indicate orthorhombic structure. The resistivity measurements showing Tc onset of Y123 lower than Y134 for solid state reaction but higher than Y134 melt process. However, the critical temperature off-set of Y134 has lower than of Y123. The SEM and EDX show that all samples were inhomogeneous. The SEM micrograph for solid state reaction Y123 has many pores between the grain and the grain size clearly demonstrated and bigger than Y134. It was seen that these pores are party eliminated in melt process samples. FTIR spectra detected the trace of carbonate residue in all samples.
