The basic power quality problems in the distribution network are voltage sag (dip), voltage flickering, and the service interruptions. STATCOM is a Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) technology device which can independently control the flow of reactive power. This paper presents the simulation and analysis of a STATCOM for voltage dip and voltage flickering mitigation. Simulations are carried out in MATLAB/Simulink to validate the performance of the STATCOM. A comparison between the six-pulse inverter and the five-level diode-clamped inverter is carried out for the performance of 66/11 KV distribution system.

This project work presents a proposed D-STATCOM system, Which is implemented in the distribution network. In the present scenario, the customer or consumer should be supplied with a quality power. The power quality issues like voltage sag, swell, lightning surges etc, can be reduced by using several advanced techniques. Among all these power quality issues voltage sag is considered and has been compensated in this project work by using D-STATCOM. The major advantage of D-STATCOM is that instead of installing the compensating device in the transmission and distribution line, the D-STATCOM unit is implemented at the consumers premises to maintain stable voltage for the connected electrical equipment’s and also to provide safe operation of the electrical equipment’s by extending their life time. The software ie., implemented by using MATLAB Simulink and the results are also verified experimentally by a hardware unit

AbstractVoltage sag or voltage dips are significant to industrial reliability. There is a necessity to characterize the feeder level power quality (PQ) and the PQ performance among various utility companies. Contamination/pollution induced flashover is the ultimate consequence of the creeping discharges across the insulator strings which induce voltage sag. These have a severe threat on the safe and reliable operation of power systems. In the present work an attempt has been made to experimentally investigate the occurrence of voltage sag/dips during pollution induced flashovers. Results show significant dip/sag in the voltage magnitude during the flashover process.

Increased utilization of nonlinear loads in the power distribution system with profound integration of renewable energy requires improved power quality control. This paper proposes a Reformed Second Order Generalized Integrated (R-SOGI) control scheme for enhancing the output of the Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) for the objective of achieving the desired sinusoidal voltage wave shape at the common point of services and harmonic reduction. The DVR incorporates a Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) system using the Z-source Inverter (ZSI), providing the necessary active power to mitigate the voltage sag/swell and power demand. ZSI offers step-down as well as step-up abilities, it makes the converters to operate in the conditions of shoot-through. Therefore, the application of ZSI-based DVR topology seems very promising. The compensating reference voltage is generated by the R-SOGI algorithm, which offers superior output under conditions for grid voltage irregularities, including voltage sag/swell and unbalanced and distorted utility grid voltages. In comparison to DVR based on the VSI voltage inverter (VSI), the response from ZSI-DVR to a reduction of voltage distortions and harmonics is investigated. An experimental SPV ZSI-DVR prototype is developed in the laboratory to check the effectiveness of the controller and is tested under balanced and unbalanced supply and dynamic load conditions.

Kata kunci: Kualiti kuasa, sistem pakar–kabur, lendut, ampul dan sampukan One of the important aspects in power quality assessment is automated detection and classification of power quality disturbances which requires the use of artificial intelligent techniques. This paper presents the application of fuzzy–expert system for classification of short duration voltage disturbances which include voltage sag, swell and interruption. To obtain unique features of the voltage disturbances, fast Fourier transform analysis and root mean square averaging technique are utilized so as to determine the disturbance parameters such as duration, maximum and minimum rms voltage magnitudes. Based on these parameters, a fuzzy-expert system has been developed to set the fuzzy rules incorporating five inputs and three outputs. The system is designed for detecting and classifying the three types of short duration voltage disturbances, so as to determine whether the disturbance is instantaneous, momentary and non sag, swell and interruption. To verify the accuracy of the proposed system, it has been tested with recorded voltage disturbances obtained from monitoring. Tests results showed that the developed fuzzy–expert system gives a correct classification rate of 98.4 %. Key words: Power quality, fuzzy–expert system, sag, swell and interruption.
