In this paper we construct indefinite theta series for lattices of arbitrary signature $(p,q)$ as ‘incomplete’ theta integrals, that is, by integrating the theta forms constructed by the second author with J. Millson over certain singular $q$-chains in the associated symmetric space $D$. These chains typically do not descend to homology classes in arithmetic quotients of $D$, and consequently the theta integrals do not give rise to holomorphic modular forms, but rather to the non-holomorphic completions of certain mock modular forms. In this way we provide a general geometric framework for the indefinite theta series constructed by Zwegers and more recently by Alexandrov, Banerjee, Manschot, and Pioline, Nazaroglu, and Raum. In particular, the coefficients of the mock modular forms are identified with intersection numbers.

Abstract In the theory of harmonic Maaß forms and mock modular forms, mock theta functions are distinguished examples which arose from q-hypergeometric examples of Ramanujan. Recently, there has been a body of work on higher depth mock modular forms. Here, we introduce distinguished examples of these forms, which we call higher depth mock theta functions, and develop q-hypergeometric expressions for them. We provide three examples of mock theta functions of depth two, each arising by multiplying a classical mock theta function with a certain specialization of a universal mock theta function. In addition, we give their modular completions, and relate each to a q-hypergeometric series.

AbstractThe u-plane integral is the contribution of the Coulomb branch to correlation functions of $${\mathcal {N}}=2$$ N = 2 gauge theory on a compact four-manifold. We consider the u-plane integral for correlators of point and surface observables of topologically twisted theories with gauge group $$\mathrm{SU}(2)$$ SU ( 2 ) , for an arbitrary four-manifold with $$(b_1,b_2^+)=(0,1)$$ ( b 1 , b 2 + ) = ( 0 , 1 ) . The u-plane contribution equals the full correlator in the absence of Seiberg–Witten contributions at strong coupling, and coincides with the mathematically defined Donaldson invariants in such cases. We demonstrate that the u-plane correlators are efficiently determined using mock modular forms for point observables, and Appell–Lerch sums for surface observables. We use these results to discuss the asymptotic behavior of correlators as function of the number of observables. Our findings suggest that the vev of exponentiated point and surface observables is an entire function of the fugacities.

Abstract After the significant work of Zagier on the traces of singular moduli, Jeon, Kang and Kim showed that the Galois traces of real-valued class invariants given in terms of the singular values of the classical Weber functions can be identified with the Fourier coefficients of weakly holomorphic modular forms of weight 3/2 on the congruence subgroups of higher genus by using the Bruinier-Funke modular traces. Extending their work, we construct real-valued class invariants by using the singular values of the generalized Weber functions of level 5 and prove that their Galois traces are Fourier coefficients of a harmonic weak Maass form of weight 3/2 by using Shimura’s reciprocity law.

We define a global linear operator that projects holomorphic modular forms defined on the Siegel upper half space of genus [Formula: see text] to all the rational boundaries of lower degrees. This global operator reduces to Siegel's [Formula: see text] operator when considering only the maximal standard cusps of degree [Formula: see text]. One advantage of this generalization is that it allows us to give a general notion of cusp forms in genus [Formula: see text] and to bridge this new notion with the classical one found in the literature.
