This paper provides a survey of particular values of Ramanujan's theta function $\varphi(q)=\sum_{n=-\infty}^{\infty}q^{n^2}$, when $q=e^{-\pi\sqrt{n}}$, where $n$ is a positive rational number. First, descriptions of the tools used to evaluate theta functions are given. Second, classical values are briefly discussed. Third, certain values due to Ramanujan and later authors are given. Fourth, the methods that are used to determine these values are described. Lastly, an incomplete evaluation found in Ramanujan's lost notebook, but now completed and proved, is discussed with a sketch of its proof.

As analytic statements, classical $q$-series identities are equalities between power series for $|q|<1$. This paper concerns a different kind of identity, which we call a quantum $q$-series identity. By a quantum $q$-series identity we mean an identity which does not hold as an equality between power series inside the unit disk in the classical sense, but does hold on a dense subset of the boundary -- namely, at roots of unity. Prototypical examples were given over thirty years ago by Cohen and more recently by Bryson-Ono-Pitman-Rhoades and Folsom-Ki-Vu-Yang. We show how these and numerous other quantum $q$-series identities can all be easily deduced from one simple classical $q$-series transformation. We then use other results from the theory of $q$-hypergeometric series to find many more such identities. Some of these involve Ramanujan's false theta functions and/or mock theta functions.

In this article, we define Em,n for any positive real numbers m and n involving Ramanujan’s product of theta-functions ψ(−q) and f(q), which is analogous to Ramanujan’s remarkable product of theta-functions and establish its several properties by Ramanujan. We establish general theorems for the explicit evaluations of Em,n and its explicit values.

AbstractWe compute asymptotic estimates for the Fourier coefficients of two mock theta functions, which come from Bailey pairs derived by Lovejoy and Osburn. To do so, we employ the circle method due to Wright and a modified Tauberian theorem. We encounter cancelation in our estimates for one of the mock theta functions due to the auxiliary function $$\theta _{n,p}$$ θ n , p arising from the splitting of Hickerson and Mortenson. We deal with this by using higher-order asymptotic expansions for the Jacobi theta functions.

A refined asymptotics of the Jacobi theta functions and their logarithmic derivatives have been received. The asymptotics of the Nevanlinna characteristics of the indicated functions and the arbitrary elliptic function have been found. The estimation of the type of the Weierstrass sigma functions has been given.

In 1988, E. Verlinde gave a remarkable conjectural formula for the dimension of conformal blocks over a smooth curve in terms of representations of affine Lie algebras. Verlinde's formula arose from physical considerations, but it attracted further attention from mathematicians when it was realized that the space of conformal blocks admits an interpretation as the space of generalized theta functions. A proof followed through the work of many mathematicians in the 1990s. This book gives an authoritative treatment of all aspects of this theory. It presents a complete proof of the Verlinde formula and full details of the connection with generalized theta functions, including the construction of the relevant moduli spaces and stacks of G-bundles. Featuring numerous exercises of varying difficulty, guides to the wider literature and short appendices on essential concepts, it will be of interest to senior graduate students and researchers in geometry, representation theory and theoretical physics.

We revisit the critical two-dimensional Ashkin–Teller model, i.e. the \mathbb{Z}_2ℤ2 orbifold of the compactified free boson CFT at c=1c=1. We solve the model on the plane by computing its three-point structure constants and proving crossing symmetry of four-point correlation functions. We do this not only for affine primary fields, but also for Virasoro primary fields, i.e. higher twist fields and degenerate fields. This leads us to clarify the analytic properties of Virasoro conformal blocks and fusion kernels at c=1c=1. We show that blocks with a degenerate channel field should be computed by taking limits in the central charge, rather than in the conformal dimension. In particular, Al. Zamolodchikov’s simple explicit expression for the blocks that appear in four-twist correlation functions is only valid in the non-degenerate case: degenerate blocks, starting with the identity block, are more complicated generalized theta functions.
