In maintenance practice, there is such a situation where the spare parts replacement should be carried out at the scheduling time of calendar or usage for whichever comes first. The issue of two-dimensional preventive maintenance usually was not addressed by traditional methods, and at present, few studies were focused on this very topic. Based on these considerations, this paper presented the two-dimensional preventive policy where replacements of spare parts are based on both calendar time and usage time. A novel model was developed to forecast spare parts demands under two-dimensional preventive maintenance policy, and a discrete algorithm was presented for solving the mathematical model. A case study was given to demonstrate its applicability and validity, and it was showed that the presented model can be used to forecast spare parts demands as well as to optimize spare parts and preventive maintenance jointly.

Selecting complex equipment with availability requirements as the object of study, this article investigates an availability-based warranty policy. Under this policy, apart from providing repairs or replacements upon failures, the manufacturer guarantees a negotiated availability level of products during the warranty period. In order to satisfy the availability requirement of the warranted products with rational cost, two-dimensional preventive maintenance strategy is carried out by the manufacturer, which is scheduled by considering the age and usage of the warranted items. By optimizing two-dimensional preventive maintenance strategy, this study aims to meet products’ availability requirement with the lowest cost from the manufacturer’s perspective. Moreover, customized preventive maintenance programs are designed for different customer categories. Finally, we provide a numerical example to verify the effectiveness of the proposed availability-based warranty policy. The results demonstrate that two-dimensional preventive maintenance strategy is superior in terms of warranty cost and operational availability. Meanwhile, customized preventive maintenance policy is more beneficial to both the transaction sides.

Must the water networks be fail-proof or must they remain safe during a failure? What must water system managers try to achieve? The present paper introduces a methodology for the hierarchical analysis (in time and space) of the preventive maintenance policy of water supply networks, using water supply system performance indices. This is being accomplished through a technical–economic analysis that takes into account all kinds of costs referring to the repair or replacement of trouble-causing parts of the water supply network. The optimal preventive maintenance schedule suggested by the methodology is compared with the empirically based maintenance policy applied to the Athens water supply system.
