The Russian Far East

Russia faces an acute demographic crisis and labor shortage, and this crisis is most evident in the Russian Far East (RFE). Migration from within Russia and immigration from foreign sources are one potential solution to this crisis. This paper examines the history of migration to the RFE and addresses the questions of where the necessary additional migrants or immigrants might come from and what political, cultural and economic structures might be most effective in mitigating the existing demographic situation.

Статья посвящена актуальной проблеме в демографическом развитии Дальнего Востока России – проанализированы миграционные процессы (межрегиональные, со странами СНГ и дальним зарубежьем) и показано их влияние на динамику численности населения в регионе. Проведенный анализ позволил сделать предположение, что в условиях современного демографического развития РФ Дальневосточный регион не может рассчитывать на активизацию межрегиональной миграции. В работе показана значимость миграционного взаимодействия со странами СНГ и дальнего зарубежья. Приведено мнение ведущих ученых о решении демографических проблем на основе принятой в 2020 г. Национальной программы развития Дальнего Востока до 2035 г. В заключении статьи подчеркнуто, что одной из стратегических целей развития Дальнего Востока является реализация геополитической задачи закрепления населения.

Because of its energy reserves and long history of economic links with North Korea, the Russian Far East could provide useful incentives needed to help convince Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear program. For this reason, the United States should begin crafting a regionally based strategy that includes Russia.
