Redescription and new records of a poorly known leucosiid crab, Pseudophilyra punctulata Chen & Ng, 2003, and description of a new species of Pseudophilyra from Japan (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura)

A poorly known leucosiid crab, Pseudophilyra punctulata Chen & Ng, 2003, originally described on the basis of an immature male holotype and an immature female paratype from Singapore, is rediscovered and rediagnosed on the basis of material from Thailand, the Philippines and the Ryukyu Islands (Japan). In addition, a new species closely related to P. punctulata, P. parilis, is described and illustrated on the basis of material from Mie Prefecture, Honshu mainland of Japan. The new species is distinguished from P. punctulata by the coarser granules bordering the lateral carapace margins and the different shape of the gonopods. Pseudophilyra tridentata Miers, 1879, is also compared with P. punctulata and P. parilis n. sp. because of the close similarities in the overall morphology of the carapace and appendages, but can easily be differentiated by the smoother carapace and thoracic sternum surface, different shape of the carapace and the stouter cheliped palm. It is possible that previous records of P. tridentata outside Japan might contain more than one species.

Five species of the genus Polyonyx Stimpson, 1858 are reported from southern Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, and Peninsular Malaysia. All of them belong to the P. sinensis group, which is morphologically defined by having the dactyli of the ambulatory legs each with the dorsal claw being much smaller than the ventral claw. Two species are described as new to science, one each from Peninsular Malaysia and the Ryukyu Islands in Japan, and their affinities are discussed. Polyonyx boucheti Osawa, 2007, P. heok Osawa & Ng, 2016, and P. thai Werding, 2001, are also newly reported from southern Japan, the Philippines, and Singapore. A key to the Indo-West Pacific species of the P. sinensis group is provided.

Discovery of a new hermit crab species from the Ryukyu Islands, Japan, led us to reexamine the holotype and supplemental specimens of Trichopagurus trichophthalmus (Forest), the type species of the heretofore monotypic Trichopagurus de Saint Laurent. Our examination has revealed that the gill lamellae of T. trichophthalmus are actually entire (= biserial), rather than shallowly divided distally (= quadriserial) as reported by de Saint Laurent (1970). The new species is assigned to Trichopagurus because of the 11 pairs of biserial gills, well-developed rostrum, moderately long male right sexual tube directed toward exterior, and the possession of a single left gonopore in female. The new species, T. macrochela n. sp., is distinguished from T. trichophthalmus primarily by the dorsoventrally flattened carpus with a distinctly delimited dorsomesial margin, less setose ambulatory legs, and markedly asymmetrical coxae of the female fifth pereopods, of which the left bears numerous setae on the ventral surface. It has been also shown that previous records of T. trichophthalmus from the Palau and Yap Islands are based on both true T. trichophthalmus and T. macrochela. A comparative, updated redescription of T. trichophthalmus is also provided.

A new mitten crab species of the genus Eriocheir De Haan, 1835, E. ogasawaraensis n. sp., is described from the Ogasawara Islands, Japan. It is morphologically most similar to E. japonica (De Haan, 1835), found on the Japanese mainland, the Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan, the Russian Far East, Korea and China, but diagnostic is the proportionately broader and dorsally flattened carapace which usually lacks the fourth anterolateral tooth, the ornamentation of the epistome, the male first gonopod and its the coloration. The biology of the new species and the different interpretations concerning the systematics of Eriocheir are briefly discussed.

A new species of the pagurid hermit crab genus Catapagurus A. Milne-Edwards, 1880, C. insolitus, is described and illustrated based on specimens from shallow waters in Okinawa Island, the Ryukyus. It belongs to an informal species group characterized by the possession of blade-shaped ambulatory dactyli, and is morphologically most similar to C. kosugei (Asakura, 2001). However, the new species is unique within the genus in having a multispinose antennal acicle, rarely seen in species of the family Paguridae.

Two species of the chirostyloid families Sternostylidae and Eumunididae, Sternostylus investigatoris (Alcock & Anderson, 1899) and Eumunida balteipes n. sp., are reported on the basis of material collected from deep waters off Kume Island, Ryukyu Islands, southwestern Japan. Sternostylus investigatoris is recorded for the first time and is the second species of the genus from Japanese waters. Eumunida balteipes n. sp. is morphologically closest to E. sternomaculata de Saint Laurent & Macpherson, 1990, but the armature of the thoracic sternite 3 and P1 palm distinguishes the two species.
