Among the agencies concerned with meteorology, the Meteorological-Geophysical Institute of West-Berlin (Institut für Meteorologie und Geophysik der Freien Universität Berlin) plays a unique role, because it is the only institution in the meteorological field engaged in all three facets of such a scientific program: research, education, and operational activities in the weather service of West-Berlin. This is a result of the special situation of West-Berlin. In order to understand this feature, a brief history of the meteorological activities in Berlin is described.
