In this Chapter a triple-domed basilica constructed at the end of the 19th century is selected as a case study to present a methodology for the selection of the appropriate intervention techniques in monumental structures. The methodology includes in-situ and laboratory testing, application of analytical methods, consideration of geotechnical parameters and regional seismicity. Seismic loads are estimated according to contemporary and older concepts for seismic design. Since the impact of near-fault phenomena on masonry structures has not been thoroughly studied, although considered as responsible for extensive structural damage during major seismic events, a procedure is presented in order to account for the special characteristics of strong ground motion, in the so-called near-fault region. The seismic performance of the structure before and after interventions, using traditional and new technology, is assessed by applying a validated finite element model. Also, the out-of-plane behavior of structural parts is evaluated through kinematic analysis of selective collapse mechanisms.

In this paper, the first result on the collapse behavior of reinforced masonry domes under seismic loads is presented. A certain masonry dome is modeled through NURBS surfaces, which have the great advantage to represent accurately complex geometries. The obtained NURBS model is imported in the MATLAB® environment, in which an initial NURBS mesh is defined. An upper bound limit analysis is applied: each element is idealized as rigid block and eventual plastic dissipation is allowed only along element edges. The minimum of the kinematic multipliers is found by optimizing the NURBS mesh (i.e. modifying the position of fracture lines) through a meta-heuristic algorithm (e.g. a Genetic Algorithm). A reinforcing system made by FRCM fibers is included through additional NURBS surfaces: each new surface represents a strip and exhibits only a tensile contribute in the evaluation of plastic dissipation. The dome of the church of Anime Sante, which collapsed during the L’Aquila earthquake in 2009, is considered as meaningful case study. A standard disposition of FRCM fibers, typically designed for incrementing the vertical load bearing capacity, has been hypothesized. The reinforced dome is analyzed under a horizontal acceleration linear in height and constant in plane and a comparison between the unreinforced and the reinforced case is presented.

After many years of clinical practice, research and the teaching of projective tests, Shentoub and her colleagues (Debray, Brelet, Chabert & al.) put forward an original and rigorous method of analysis and interpretation of the TAT protocols in terms of psychoanalysis and clinical psychopathology. They developed the TAT process theory in order to understand how the subject builds a narrative. Our article will emphasize the source of the analytical approach developed by V. Shentoub in the 1950s to current research; the necessity of marking the boundary between the manifest and latent content in the cards; the procedure for analyzing the narrative, supported by an analysis sheet for understanding the stories' structure and identifying the defense mechanisms; and how developing hypotheses about how the mental functions are organized, as well as their potential psychopathological characteristics; and the formulation of a diagnosis in psychodynamic terms. In conjunction with the analysis and interpretation of the Rorschach test, this approach allows us to develop an overview of the subject's mental functioning, taking into account both the psychopathological elements that may threaten the subject and the potential for a therapeutic process. We will illustrate this by comparing neurotic, borderline, and psychotic personalities.
