In the past, various influencing parameters of the conventional semicircular-bladed Savonius rotor such as overlap ratio, aspect ratio, number of rotor blades have been optimized through numerical and experimental investigations to improve its performance. Furthermore, the rotor performance under the influence of various blade profiles, shaft, endplates, and augmentation techniques has also been studied. Recent rudimentary studies with an elliptical-bladed Savonius rotor have demonstrated its potential to harness the wind energy more efficiently; however, its influencing parameters have not been thoroughly studied and therefore they need to be optimized to arrive at a suitable design configuration. In view of this, the objective of the present investigation is to optimize the number of elliptical blades on the rotor and then to find the influence of shaft with the optimized number of blades on the rotor performance. For this, 2D unsteady simulation is carried out with different combinations of blades, and after having optimized the number of blades, the influence of shaft on the rotor performance is studied. The continuity, unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations, and two equation eddy viscosity SST (Shear Stress transport) k-ω model are solved by using the commercial FVM based solver ANSYS Fluent. The torque and power coefficients are calculated as a function of tip speed ratio (TSR) and at rotating conditions. The total pressure, velocity magnitude, turbulence intensity and streamline patterns are obtained and analyzed to arrive at the intended objective. The numerical investigation demonstrates an improved flow characteristics and performance coefficients of the 2-elliptical-bladed profile without shaft.

The torque of a conventional Savonius rotor is studied experimentally for overlap ratio from 0.10 to 0.70, blade edge condition (flat and round) and the change in Reynolds number. The results indicate that the coefficient of static torque improves marginally for round edged rotors for rotor angles up to 45°. The coefficient of static torque decreases as the overlap ratio is increased to 0.70 from 0.50 and is independent of the Reynolds numbers studied in the range between 120000 to 200000. Wind tunnel blockage ratio is studied. The power coefficient increases with the increase in the Reynolds number, whereas the coefficient of static torque is independent of the Reynolds number in the range studied. The coefficient of power, torque coefficient and coefficient static torque are independent of blockage ratios at a given Reynolds number.

One of the most important diagnostic problems multilayer dielectric materials and coatings is the development of methods for quantitative interpretation of the checkout results their electrophysical and geometric parameters. The results of a study of the potential informativeness of the multi-frequency radio wave method of surface electromagnetic waves during reconstruction of the electrophysical and geometric parameters of multilayer dielectric coatings are presented. The simulation model is presented that makes it possible to evaluate of the accuracy of reconstruction of the electrophysical and geometric parameters of multilayer dielectric coatings. The model takes into account the values of the electrophysical and geometric parameters of the coating, the noise level in the measurement data and the measurement bandwidth. The results of simulation and experimental investigations of reconstruction of the structure of relative permittivitties and thicknesses of single-layer and double-layer dielectric coatings with different thicknesses, with different values of the standard deviation (RMS) of the noise level in the measured attenuation coefficients of the surface slow electromagnetic wave are presented. Coatings based on the following materials were investigated: polymethyl methacrylate, F-4D PTFE, RO3010. The accuracy of reconstruction of the electrophysical parameters of the layers decreases with an increase in the number of evaluated parameters and an increase in the noise level. The accuracy of the estimates of the electrophysical parameters of the layers also decreases with a decrease in their relative permittivity and thickness. The results of experimental studies confirm the adequacy of the developed simulation model. The presented model allows for a specific measuring complex that implements the multi-frequency radio wave method of surface electromagnetic waves, to quantify the potential possibilities for the accuracy of reconstruction of the electrophysical and geometric parameters of multilayer dielectric materials and coatings. Experimental investigations and simulation results of a multilayer dielectric coating demonstrated the theoretical capabilities gained relative error permittivity and thickness of the individual layers with relative error not greater than 10 %, with a measurement bandwidth of 1 GHz and RMS of noise level 0,003–0,004.
