A method for calculating the generalized momentum distribution in finite nuclear systems is presented and discussed within the context of the independent particle shell model. Application to the light closed-shell nuclei 16O and 40Ca is included.

We present compact analytic expressions for the two-body momentum distribution η2(p1, p2) in Z=N closed-shell nuclei derived within the context of the independent particle shell model. Results are derived for the nucleus 16 O . The effect of dynamical short-range correlations is estimated using Jastrow-type correlation functions in the case of the nucleus 4 He .

The natural orbitals (NOs) and natural occupation numbers (NON) of various N = Z, sp and sd shell nuclei are calculated by applying a correlated one-body density matrix (OBDM). The correlated density matrix has been evaluated by considering central correlations of Jastrow type and an approximation named factor cluster expansion. The correlation effects on NOs, NON and the Fermi sea depletion (FSD) are discussed and analyzed. In addition, an approximate expression for the correlated OBDM of the nuclear matter has been used for the evaluation of the relative momentum distribution and FSD. We found that the value of FSD is higher in closed shell nuclei compared to open shell ones and it is lower compared to the case of nuclear matter. This statement could be confirmed by relevant experimental studies.

The influence of state dependent short range correlations on the occupation numbers of the single particle shell model orbits of the doubly closed shell nuclei 16O and 40Ca is examined. The study shows that the effect of the state dependence of the short range correlations is rather small. The total depletion of the nuclear Fermi sea changes slightly compared with the one calculated by considering state independent short range correlations.
