In order to study the influence of traveling wave effect on the seismic response and damping effect of suspended structure, a series of shaking table tests of the 1 : 20 suspended structure have been carried out to compare and analyze the dynamic responses of suspended structures under two points and a consistent input. The vibration damping effect and vibration reduction law of suspended structure are discussed at different apparent wave velocity and in the different connection. The research shows that the damping suspended structure has a good damping effect, and the amplitude reduction of the top displacement peak response is up to 15%, which corresponds to smaller apparent velocities. Moreover, the upper bound of the maximum acceleration response at the structures’ top under nonuniform input motions equals that of the uniform motion. However, there is a hysteresis in the acceleration response under wave travelling excitations, and the smaller the apparent wave velocity, the more obvious the hysteresis.

This paper deals with multimodal reduction of structural elastic vibrations. Super absorbent polymer beads (SAP beads) have been introduced as a simple damping device inspired by the multimodal vibration reduction effect by passengers on railway vehicles. A series of vibration measurement tests using a 1:10 scale model of railway vehicle floor structure (model underframe) was carried out. The SAP beads which are sold commonly as water retention agent were stacked in a container and applied to the model underframe. From the experiments, multimodal vibration reduction effects have been demonstrated. A drastic difference has been observed when water was added together with SAP beads. To investigate the basic mechanism of the damping effect obtained by the experiments, an analytical model, which consists of multiple masses that are supported at an angle to each other, and its simplified model was proposed and numerical studies were conducted. Some specific combinations of the mass, spring, and damping elements in the model could express the experimental results well, and it has been estimated from the numerical results that each SAP layer act as an un-uniform subsystem.

Response control techniques such as a base-isolation and a vibration control have been a general vibration reduction system for upgrading of seismic safety or habitability improvement in civil and architectural structure after Kobe earthquake. In such state in Japan, an application of the vibration reduction device to a small-scale structure has been carried out actively in recent years. Especially, in the important institution of the cities such as refuge place, hospital, school, information and communication institution where function maintenance is needed, it is important to maintain its performance of the machinery and equipment in the facility with an upgrade of structural seismic safety. Moreover, in the future, upgrading of seismic safety of the particular equipments is urgent business. This study has been examined a compact and low cost damping device for a base-isolation system of light weight mechanical structures like a computer server rack. In this paper, experimental and analytical results on the performances of the product type damping device using damping effect caused by Eddy-Current are described.
