This chapter shows that the wider use of Web search engines, reconsidering the theoretical and methodological frameworks to grasp new information practices. Beginning with an overview of the recent challenges implied by the dynamic nature of the Web, this chapter then traces the information behavior related concepts in order to present the different approaches from the user perspective. The authors pay special attention to the concept of “information practice” and other related concepts such as “use”, “activity”, and “behavior” largely used in the literature but not always strictly defined. The authors provide an overview of user-oriented studies that are meaningful to understand the different contexts of use of electronic information access systems, focusing on five approaches: the system-oriented approaches, the theories of information seeking, the cognitive and psychological approaches, the management science approaches, and the marketing approaches. Future directions of work are then shaped, including social searching and the ethical, cultural, and political dimensions of Web search engines. The authors conclude considering the importance of Critical theory to better understand the role of Web Search engines in our modern society.

PurposeThis study examined the relationship between financial information seeking behavior and financial literacy, as well as the relationship between parents' teaching and behavior with financial information seeking behavior through the factors of the risk information seeking and processing model among youth.Design/methodology/approachA sample of 802 tertiary education students participated in this cross-sectional study. Using covariance-based structural equation modeling, the model was assessed and hypotheses were tested.FindingsThe results revealed that financial information seeking behavior contributed to youth's financial literacy. While parents' sound financial behavior was directly related to seeking financial information, both parents' financial teaching and behavior indirectly, through the risk information seeking process, encouraged youth to actively seek for financial information. Moreover, parents' financial socialization directly and also indirectly through the risk information seeking and processing model explained youth's financial information avoidance. Among the two parts of the risk information seeking and processing model, planned behavior factors played a more salient role than cognitive need for financial information.Originality/valueThis study extends the risk information seeking and processing model by integrating family financial socialization to the model and applies it in the context of consumers' financial behavior. The results improve our understanding of the social and psychological mechanism that drives consumers' financial literacy and decision-making.

SUMMARYThe steady increase in online health information seeking by patients is ingrained in central notions of patient-centered care and shared decision-making models reflected in operative dentistry and the healthcare industry at large. More patients today seek health information prior to an appointment, communicate their findings with their providers, and expect two-way communication exchanges. This e-consumer trend has many implications for operative dentistry, for which surgery, by its very nature, lends to a confluence of questioning and informational needs. Operative dentists must acknowledge patient information and be prepared to address the breadth of information brought to them. The purpose of this literature review is threefold: 1) to provide the operative dentist with information about the demographics, psychology, and behavior of today's e-health patient; 2) to provide a review of the benefits and challenges of communicating with e-health patients; and 3) to provide recommendations for communicating with e-patients interpersonally and through Internet communication. In so doing, it is hoped that discussion can provide insight useful for improving provider/patient relationships in the progressive communication era.
