Community-based work experiences for students with significant disabilities: Real-world work equals real-world success

Students with significant disabilities typically experience poor postschool employment outcomes. However, when provided opportunities to work and engage within their communities, they can gain necessary work-specific and workplace social skills to improve outcomes. This article outlines a six-step model for community-based employment programs designed to support students with significant disabilities. The six steps include (a) interagency collaboration, (b) staff training, (c) scheduling, (d) skill acquisition, (e) data tracking, and (f) student involvement. One teacher’s experience as she worked to create such a program is used as a guide to indicate how the steps can be transferred to other schools.

Objectives: To examine the effect of a fall prevention program offered under real-world conditions on balance maintenance several months after the program. To explore the program’s impact on falls. Method: A quasi-experimental study was conducted among community-dwelling seniors, with pre- and postintervention measures of balance performance and self-reported falls. Ten community-based organizations offered the intervention (98 participants) and 7 recruited participants to the study’s control arm (102 participants). An earlier study examined balance immediately after the 12-week program. The present study focuses on the 12-month effect. Linear regression (balance) and negative binomial regression (falls) procedures were performed.falls. Results: During the 12-month study period, experimental participants improved and maintained their balance as reflected by their scores on three performance tests. There was no evidence of an effect on falls.falls. Discussion: Structured group exercise programs offered in community-based settings can maintain selected components of balance for several months after the program’s end.

Based on a real world, public company, $30 million embezzlement and financial statement fraud, this case helps students recognize red flags, analyze a situation using the fraud diamond, perform research and reflect on their own work experiences to support a belief, and conduct financial statement analysis. Its variety of activities are suitable for both undergraduate and graduate accounting students, and in-class and out of class learning. Because it is based on an actual fraud, it includes an epilogue with links to news stories and court documents, which improves student engagement with the material.

Teacher preparation for inclusive education of students with significant disabilities requires an understanding of the requisite skills and dispositions to be taught during the teacher preparation period. Given the relative scarcity of inclusive placements for this population, as well as limited research-based teacher preparation practices to promote inclusive education, a Delphi study was completed to query expert faculty on the priority skills and activities used in teacher preparation. Consensus emerged through the Delphi study over three rounds of surveys to faculty, centering on essential skills of special education teachers, practices used by faculty to teach and evaluate these skills, and conditions that support and constrain teacher development of these essential skills. Although faculty largely supported research-based practices, new areas emerged, including teacher leadership skills. Implications for research and practice are included.
