This paper proposes a zero-one quadratic assignment model for dealing with the storage location assignment problem when there are weight constraints. Our analysis shows that operations can be improved using our model. When comparing the strategy currently used in a real-life company with the designed model, we found that the new placement of products allowed a reduction of up to 22% on the picking distance. This saving is higher than that achieved with the creation of density zones, a procedure commonly used to deal with weight constraints, according to the literature.

AbstractRobotic Mobile Fulfillment System (RMFS) affects the traditional scheduling problems heavily while operating a warehouse. This paper focuses on storage assignment optimization for Fishbone Robotic Mobile Fulfilment Systems (FRMFS). Based on analyzing operation characteristics of FRMFS, a storage assignment optimization model is proposed with the objectives of maximizing operation efficiency and balancing aisle workload. Adaptive Genetic Algorithm (AGA) is designed to solve the proposed model. To validate the effectiveness of AGA in terms of iteration and optimization rate, this paper designs a variety of scenarios with different task sizes and storage cells. AGA outperforms other four algorithm in terms of fitness value and convergence and has better convergence rate and stability. The experimental results also show the advancement of AGA in large size FRMFS. In conclusion, this paper proposes a storage assignment model for FRMFS to reduce goods movement and travel distance and improve the order picking efficiency.

In this paper, an integrated simulation optimization model for the assignment problems is developed. An effective algorithm is developed to evaluate and analyze the back-end stored simulation results. This paper proposes simulation tool SIMASI (Simulation of assignment models) to simulate assignment models. SIMASI is a tool which simulates and computes the results of different assignment models. This tool is programmed in DOT.NET and is based on analytical approach to guide optimization strategy. Objective of this paper is to provide a user friendly simulation tool which gives optimized assignment model results. Simulation is carried out by providing the required values of matrix for resource and destination requirements and result is stored in the database for further comparison and study. Result is obtained in terms of the performance measurements of classical models of assignment system. This simulation tool is interfaced with an optimization procedure based on classical models of assignment system. The simulation results are obtained and analyzed rigorously with the help of numerical examples.
