Let ℒ be the class of those groups G which can be presented in the formwhere u and v are positive words in the given generators. Here a word w is termed positive if only non-negative powers of a, b,…, c occur in w. If each generator occurs with exponent sum zero in uv-1, we term the ℒ-group G a -group. This class contains, in particular, the class X of those groups G which can be presented in the formwhere u and v are positive words, and where [u, v] is the commutator uvu-1v-1.

Abstract Let k be a field, let {\mathfrak{A}_{1}} be the k-algebra {k[x_{1}^{\pm 1},\dots,x_{s}^{\pm 1}]} of Laurent polynomials in {x_{1},\dots,x_{s}} , and let {\mathfrak{A}_{2}} be the k-algebra {k[x,y]} of polynomials in the commutative indeterminates x and y. Let {\sigma_{1}} be the monomial k-automorphism of {\mathfrak{A}_{1}} given by {A=(a_{i,j})\in GL_{s}(\mathbb{Z})} and {\sigma_{1}(x_{i})=\prod_{j=1}^{s}x_{j}^{a_{i,j}}} , {1\leq i\leq s} , and let {\sigma_{2}\in{\mathrm{Aut}}_{k}(k[x,y])} . Let {D_{i}} , {1\leq i\leq 2} , be the ring of fractions of the skew polynomial ring {\mathfrak{A}_{i}[X;\sigma_{i}]} , and let {D_{i}^{\bullet}} be its multiplicative group. Under a mild restriction for {D_{1}} , and in general for {D_{2}} , we show that {D_{i}^{\bullet}} , {1\leq i\leq 2} , contains a free subgroup. If {i=1} and {s=2} , we show that a noncentral normal subgroup N of {D_{1}^{\bullet}} contains a free subgroup.

We link distinct concepts of geometric group theory and homotopy theory through underlying combinatorics. For a flag simplicial complex $K$ , we specify a necessary and sufficient combinatorial condition for the commutator subgroup $RC_K'$ of a right-angled Coxeter group, viewed as the fundamental group of the real moment-angle complex $\mathcal {R}_K$ , to be a one-relator group; and for the Pontryagin algebra $H_{*}(\Omega \mathcal {Z}_K)$ of the moment-angle complex to be a one-relator algebra. We also give a homological characterization of these properties. For $RC_K'$ , it is given by a condition on the homology group $H_2(\mathcal {R}_K)$ , whereas for $H_{*}(\Omega \mathcal {Z}_K)$ it is stated in terms of the bigrading of the homology groups of $\mathcal {Z}_K$ .

AbstractA group G is termed conjugacy separable (c.s.) if any pair of distinct conjugacy classes may be mapped to distinct conjugacy classes in some finite epimorph of G. The free product of A and B with cyclic amalgamated subgroup H is shown to be c.s. if A and B are both free, or are both finitely generated nilpotent groups. Further, one-relator groups with nontrivial center and HNN extensions with c.s. base group and finite associated subgroups are also c.s.
