Luigi Capuana: Experimental Fiction and Cultural Mediation in Post-Risorgimento Italy. The studies in this collection revisit established critical positions which confine Luigi Capuana’s work within the orbits of Naturalism and Positivism. A variety of theoretical readings in the volume investigate how the author’s experimentalism and eclectic interests respond to positivist ideology, the limitations of scientific practices, and the conflicts and anxieties of the fin de siècle which arise from a change in intellectual attitudes towards new ways of interpreting reality. The volume’s three sections focus on cultural mediation and the construction of socio-literary identities, gender representation and metaliterature, and on the author’s experimentation with the natural, supernatural and fantastic. Each section illustrates how the search for the new and experimentalism constitute driving forces in the author’s artistic investigation and production, making his work an important source for a new reading of the fin de siècle’s epistemological revision.

Abstract This article is a reminder that the concept of ‘annihilation of space’ or ‘spatial compression’, often used as a shorthand for referring to the cultural or economic consequences of industrial mobility, has a long intellectual history. The concept thus comes loaded with a specific outlook on the experience of modernity, which is – I argue – unsuitable for any cultural or social history of space. This article outlines the etymology of the concept and shows: first, that the historical phenomena it pretends to describe are too complex for such a simplistic signpost; and, second, that the term is never a neutral descriptor but always an engagement with a form of historical and cultural mediation on the nature of modernity in relation to space. In both cases this term obfuscates more than it reveals. As a counter-example, I look at the effect of the railways on popular representations of space and conclude that postmodern geography is a relative dead end for historians interested in the social and cultural history of space.

Στην παρούσα διατριβή πραγματοποιήθηκε μια διερεύνηση της πειραματικής πεζογραφίας (experimental fiction) από τη γέννησή της έως σήμερα, καθώς και μια σκιαγράφηση της ποιητικής της, αξιοποιώντας λογοτεχνικές θεωρίες σχετικές τόσο με τον ρόλο του συγγραφέα όσο και με του αναγνώστη. Παρουσιάστηκε, επίσης, η σχέση της πειραματικής πεζογραφίας με άλλα ρεύματα ή είδη της λογοτεχνικής πρωτοπορίας και του μεταμοντερνισμού και προβλήθηκαν οι όψεις του καλλιτεχνικού πειραματισμού σε άλλες τέχνες, όπως η μουσική και ο κινηματογράφος. Αναλύθηκε το ιστορικο-κοινωνικό πλαίσιο μέσα στο οποίο γεννήθηκε η πειραματική λογοτεχνία, για να ανιχνευθεί υπό ποιες συνθήκες δημιουργήθηκε και διευρύνθηκε μέχρι και τη σημερινή της μορφή. Η παρούσα διατριβή περιλαμβάνει τις αναλύσεις δύο σύγχρονων έργων πειραματικής λογοτεχνίας, του S. (2013), των JJ Abrams και Doug Dorst, και του Multiple Choice (2014), του Alejandro Zambra, μέσα από τις οποίες συγκροτήθηκε μια πρώτη ποιητική πειραματικής λογοτεχνίας.
