In recent years, anthropogenic actions have intensified forest fragmentation, causing several damages to the landscape’s natural components, propagating the loss of biodiversity. This study aims to present an analysis of the forest fragments in a conservation unit located at southern of Brazil. The evaluation was carried out for the years 1998, 2008, and 2018, by using landscape metrics and classification of remote sensing imagery of the Landsat satellite. The following metrics were analyzed: area and edge, shape, core area, and aggregation. The results indicated an increase of 16.88% in the total area of vegetation, and the percentage of fragments increased from 16.16% to 18.89%. The number of fragments decreased, resulting in an increase of the mean area in 5.4 ha. The percentage of vegetation under border effect changed from 40.2% to 37.1%. In 1998, the average nearest neighbor distance was 155.4 m, and in 2018, 149.7 m. However, this distance is still classified as a high degree of isolation, which hinders the movement of organisms and the dispersion of species. Thus, all the analyzed metrics indicated a decrease in the fragmentation, except for the edge density metric, in which its increase of 1.86 pointed to a lower degree of conservation during the analyzed period. A study of this nature is important as it provides subsidies for future researches and can contribute to action strategies to be adopted in the management plan of the area.

Due to its large territory, Brazil has different climatic regions, which determines biome variations and equally diverse ecosystems, of this variety of vegetal landscapes, accompanies the diversity of climates. In this context, results of studies carried out locally, which guide measures, decision-making laws and regulations that reach large scales in the territory, need to be carefully planned, because there is a high risk of disregarding environmental specificities of the studied areas. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the environmental dynamics resulting from the impacts of the last decades that have affected the habitat of the guaiamum (Cardisoma guanhumi) in the Acaú-Goiana Extractivist Reserve (RESEX) and surrounding areas. The analysis of the spatial-temporal dynamics, in the RESEX and adjacent areas, was made from the vegetation indices (SAVI) through remote sensing. In this way, three images of the RESEX were analyzed, two from the year 2010 and one from 2015, in which the RESEX was already in full legal operation. It is noticeable that there are some areas within the Conservation Unit with small plots of exposed soil, which can demonstrate the occurrence of fires.

All life stages of Stenochironomus atlanticus Pinho & Mendes sp. n. are described and figured. The larva mines decaying leaves held in the water of several bromeliad species (Canistrum lindenii (Regel) Mez, Neoregelia laevis (Mez) L.B. Smith, Nidularium innocentii Lemaire, Vriesea philippocoburgii Wawra, and Vriesea vagans (L.B. Smith) L.B. Smith.) in the Atlantic Rain Forest in southern Brazil [Desterro Environmental Conservation Unit (Unidade de Conservação Ambiental Desterro – UCAD), Santa Catarina Island]. Stenochironomus atlanticus is the only species in the genus found in the phytotelmata habitat, and it apparently is restricted to this environment.
