The title of this paper implies the assumption that the current doctrine with reference to the condition known as pachymeningitis is not the true one; obviously the use of this term signifies that the pathological process underlying the morbid changes met with is one of inflammation, and that without the operation of this agency they would not occur. Now, without denying the possible occurrence of a condition to which the name of cerebral pachymeningitis might with appropriateness be applied, my endeavour will be to bring forward arguments and proofs to show that the condition which usually passes under that term is not the result of inflammation at all, but that all the phenomena met with may be explained as the simple result of effusion of blood into the subdural space (arachnoid cavity).

We review the use of the Bird-Meertens Formalism as a vehicle for the construction of programs with massive implicit parallelism. We show that a simple result from the theory, concerning the expression of list homomorphisms, can help us in our search for parallel algorithms by suggesting an informal methodology which is applicable when the original result is not, and demonstrate its application to a variety of problems. One of these, a language recognition algorithm, produces a program which exploits nested parallelism. Our main purpose is to show that an understanding of the homomorphism lemma can be helpful in producing parallel programs for problems which are "not quite" list homomorphisms themselves. A more general goal is to illustrate the benefits which can arise from taking a little theory with a pinch of pragmatic salt.

A formula is given for the neighbour distribution function in liquids and dense gases, assuming that each atom is vibrating in the field of its neighbours when in their equilibrium positions. It is shown that a parabolic potential leads to a simple result. Applying this to potassium, we find a structure which bears some resemblance to a body-centred cubic. Finally we show how interatomic fields may be derived from the distribution function of a single shell of neighbours, when this has been determined from experiment.

Throughout the centuries of slavery in the Americas and the Caribbean, Africans and their descendants struggled against a social system that sought to reduce them to chattel. They found that their struggle was to continue, albeit in different forms, long after abolition. In Brazil, emancipation in 1888 was followed the next year by the demise of imperial government and the installation of the First Republic. This created a new political and legal framework for Afro-Brazilians to negotiate positions in society. Racial relations in former slave societies are not the simple result of imposed identities and social spaces by a dominant group upon an oppressed group. They evolve from a dialectical power struggle in which blacks as well as whites affect the outcome.
