Analysis and calculation of stray light is important to improve the performance of infrared detection system. In this article, we mainly discussed two sources: earth and atmosphere emission and thermal stray radiation. A method based on Monte Carlo ray-tracing in TracePro is proposed to calculate the irradiance of detector arisen from earth and atmosphere emission. The thermal stray light irradiance on detector can also be obtained by simulation in TracePro.

This paper applies a computational geometric algebra approach based on a 4 x 4 homogeneous transformation matrix to model optical systems and to evaluate their performance. In the proposed approach, the directions of the refracted/reflected rays at each boundary in the optical system are determined using skew ray tracing based upon Snell’s law. The differential changes in the image coordinates caused by optical aberrations are derived for both polychromatic and monochromatic light by applying a sensitivity analysis approach. Finally, a merit function is constructed comprising five individual defect items in order to evaluate the overall performance of a generic optical system. The proposed analytical approach provides a comprehensive and robust approach for the modeling and evaluation of optical systems.

Abstract This paper summarizes selected approaches, to generate spectral ray data for different types of spectrally varying light sources including only angular variable as well as spatial and angular variable sources. This includes a description of their general ideas and applications, the required measurements, and their mathematical concepts. Finally, achieved results for an Red/Green/Blue/White-light emitting diode (RGBW-LED) system are shown. Ray tracing simulations of a spatially and angularly spectral varying LED system combined with a spectrally sensitive optical system are qualitatively and quantitatively compared to a colorimetric far-field measurement of the same system. The results demonstrate the potential and benefits of spectral ray files in general.
