Evaluating the Usability of Home Healthcare Applications

Home healthcare applications have the potential to reduce healthcare costs and improve the quality of life for elderly people who prefer to stay in their own homes instead of making frequent visits to the hospital. This requires ambient assisted living applications that fulfil relevant needs of the users; yet it also requires applications with a high level of usability in order to achieve user acceptance, especially when the target user group is elderly people. This chapter proposes a method to be used for conducting usability evaluations of smart healthcare applications. It includes a report from a usability evaluation where the method was used to evaluate a simple home healthcare application for collecting personal health data in the home. The usability evaluation demonstrates that the method presented here facilitates identification of key usability problems, while the efforts required to conduct the evaluation are considerably reduced compared to conventional methods.

From Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) perspective it is important to have information regarding the type of care needed by bedridden elderly people (BEP) living in their homes, in order to support independence, autonomy and maximize their quality of life. Some basic tasks as eating, taking a bath and the hygiene cares may be difficult to execute, regarding that almost always the main caregiver is the other element of the couple (husband or wife). Following this trend, the development of mechatronic devices is of upmost importance in creating solutions to facilitate these tasks. This paper presents the conceptual design of a mechatronic system especially devoted to the assistance during the bath of BEP. Issues as reducing the number of caregivers to only one to assist the bath and reducing the system’s handling complexity (because most of the time it will be used by an aged person) are considered. Visits to rehabilitation centers and hospitals, and respective working meetings, are considered in the development of the proposed mechatronic system.

Abstract Robots are effectively utilized in various applications by using ambient assisted living techniquesfor improving people lifestyle. Especially, in healthcare centers, robots are played a vital role instead of using supporting staff. The healthcare application needs to process multiple tasksat one time, for that reason, multiple robots’ systems are designed to handle the tasks. The task must be dynamically allocated for each robot dynamically allocated for each robot for improving the performance of the robots. For achieving this goal, this paper introduces the bacterial Foraging Optimization building block distribution algorithm is used to allocate the work to robots heterogeneously. This algorithm allocates the resources and tasks to the robot for performing their process with a specific time and minimum computation complexity. Then the efficiency of the system is evaluated using experimental analysis and results are compared with existing methods.

Population ageing is an unprecedented challenge for human societies, which recently is globally tackled by new technologies. In this chapter technologies tailored for use by the elderly people termed ambient assisted living and e-health are discussed. Focus is only placed on those technologies that can be adapted for home use. Emphasis is drawn both on the technical front as well as on the application front based on recent literature. The scope is to make sure the audience reaches a sufficiently broad understanding of what technology is available for home use by elderly people. Applications and research efforts spent but also funded at the European level with a clear focus on those supported by elderly trials are provided. The chapter is enriched with case studies from various projects.
