According to the heterogeneous of devices of process industry and the characteristics of embedded systems, this paper proposes a data integration solution based on XML, which builds a data integration and exchanging demonstration platform in the environment of STM32, ARM9 and Windows CE.net and implements the parsing of XML documents within embedded systems. This paper gives a powerful method to realize the integration and sharing of data information among process industry field devices.

The China Ship Development and Design Center has built several separate database systems in the design center and the working groups. However, the data cannot be shared and exchanged due to no network connection as the secrecy provision limited. The paper presents the data integration method based on the XML to implement the data integration between the heterogeneous databases, which makes the data interactive convenient. The key technologies included the mapping from database to XML documents, the XML documents importing to database, querying and displaying XML documents were analyzed. The SQLToXML and XMLToSQL libraries are used to develop the program. The method has put into test, the result shows the design scheme is rationality and effective.

Many applications require exchange and integration of data from multiple, heterogeneous sources. eXtensible Markup Language (XML) is a standard developed to satisfy the convenient data exchange needs of these applications. However, XML by itself does not address the data integration requirements. This chapter discusses the challenges and techniques in XML Data Integration. It first presents a four step outline, illustrating the steps involved in the integration of XML data. This chapter, then, focuses on the first two of these steps: schema extraction and data/schema mapping. More specifically, schema extraction presents techniques to extract tree summaries, DTDs, or XML Schemas from XML documents. The discussion on data/schema mapping focuses on techniques for aligning XML data and schemas.
