Aided threshold improvement obtained by 12 hearing-impaired children was compared to the acoustic gain of their hearing aids using both the traditional 2-cc coupler and a variable volume coupler designed to approximate real ear volume in children. Results indicated that acoustic gain determined in the 2-cc coupler underestimated aided threshold improvement by approximately 8.7 dB. Use of the variable volume coupler to determine acoustic gain, however, adequately predicted aided improvement at comfort setting. Use of the variable volume coupler in hearing-aid fittings for children is discussed with special emphasis on preventing over-amplification.

Responses to a parent questionnaire served as the basis for assessing the impact of Total Communication (TC) upon social, emotional, and educational growth, as well as upon speeehreading, and speech and hearing aid use. This study was restricted to parents whose hearing-impaired children had initially been enrolled in an aural/oral program for a minimum of 2 years and then subsequently had been in a TC class in a day school setting for at least 2 years. Results indicate a significant correlation between parents' overall perception as to the benefits of TC and their perception of their children's educational and emotional growth. Further, most parents did not perceive the use of TC as adversely affecting speechreading, speech production, or hearing aid use.

The article describes the results of a two year clinical study of hearing impaired children ages 18 months to 21 years for whom educational programing was being sought. Following assessment by a team of clinicians from five disciplines, comprehensive reports to the current functioning and projected needs of each child were prepared. Results of the two year study revealed a large population of hearing impaired children with associated disabilities who had not previously been reported in the literature and for whom flexible educational programing seemed essential.
