At the close of the nineteenth century, amid pervasive fears of decadence and widespread pessimism, Frederic Leighton (1830–96) completed Flaming June (1895). Taking as its starting point Victorian responses to the work that seem incomprehensible to viewers today, this paper examines the possible meaning behind Flaming June's more impenetrable iconography. The following discussion highlights the significance of thermodynamics in the work's cultural context. It examines the impact of an implication of the second law of thermodynamics, known as the Sun's heat death – a fated apocalyptic event – and suggests that this resonated with late Victorian audiences plagued by concerns of degeneration and decadence. Considered within this context, this paper reveals further layers of meaning embedded within the imagery of Flaming June available to a Victorian audience, but which have since been eclipsed by a dominant focus on other aspects of the painting's cultural milieu.

A measurement of technologically enhanced natural occurring radioactivity materials (TENORM) in sand samples in the petroleum-producing communities of Ma'rib Province Yemen was carried out. The HPGe detector was utilized to perform the measurements. The samples were collected from 35 sites. All samples were placed in a properly cleaned container and sealed for 28 days to attain a state of secular radioactive equilibrium before analysis. The radioactivity concentrations for nuclides 40K, 232Th, 226Ra, and 238U ranged between 430.716 - 654.666, 4.347 - 43.935, 4.824 - 27.936, and 1.083 - 15.437 Bq kg-1 respectively, with averages 560.583, 20.676, 14.556 and 9.072 Bq kg-1 respectively. The results did not show any radiation risks.

PurposeThis study aimed to investigate the impact of social networks on learning requests by Arab undergraduate EFL students.Design/methodology/approachFurthermore, both types of requests (i.e. direct and indirect) have been compared under the same condition. A total of 40 Saudi EFL learners participated in this study. Their scores in the pre-test and post-test were compared.FindingsResults of the post-tests indicated that the experimental groups' performance significantly outscored the control groups. However, no significant difference was reported between the two experimental groups (i.e. direct and indirect).Originality/valueRequests, as a component of pragmatics, have been investigated extensively in the literature to aid second/foreign language learning. However, little is known about the manner by which social networks could foster learning requests.
