Abstract The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has clearly shown that major challenges and threats for humankind need to be addressed with global answers and shared decisions. Data and their analytics are crucial components of such decision-making activities. Rather interestingly, one of the most difficult aspects is reusing and sharing of accurate and detailed clinical data collected by Electronic Health Records (EHR), even if these data have a paramount importance. EHR data, in fact, are not only essential for supporting day-by-day activities, but also they can leverage research and support critical decisions about effectiveness of drugs and therapeutic strategies. In this paper, we will concentrate our attention on collaborative data infrastructures to support COVID-19 research and on the open issues of data sharing and data governance that COVID-19 had made emerge. Data interoperability, healthcare processes modelling and representation, shared procedures to deal with different data privacy regulations, and data stewardship and governance are seen as the most important aspects to boost collaborative research. Lessons learned from COVID-19 pandemic can be a strong element to improve international research and our future capability of dealing with fast developing emergencies and needs, which are likely to be more frequent in the future in our connected and intertwined world.

Abstract Issue Given the importance, of cloud environments for mobile telemedicine information systems, focus is given in this paper on the challenges rising. We discuss the pros of the access to computing services and resources on demand without having own infrastructures, and the need of advanced interoperability data formats and application program interfaces (APIs) to facilitate the usage of the infrastructure. Description of the problem Cloud-Oriented Architecture (COA) describes the architecture, where applications act as services and serve other applications in the cloud environment. The aim is IT infrastructure and software applications to be optimized for their use in cloud computing environments. But what happens in the specific field of health as data interoperability for mobile telemedicine information systems? Results Two architectures were presented using a patient's compliance and engagement solution. A simple Representational State Transfer (REST) based architectural style was implemented in a three-layered architecture first and then compared to a cloud federation model. In the second the interaction goes through the federation via a middleware layer. Internal operations of cloud providers in the federation are still transparent to the cloud users. The middleware layer aims to coordinate the interaction with cloud users and providers in the federation. But, to avoid delays in those interactions interoperability of data formats and APIs. Lessons A Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) based application was developed. Mobile telemedicine information systems are a strong instrument in patients' compliance. Many systems have proved that the used resources combined can solve clinical and administrative problems in a secure environment. Key messages The use of cloud is wide spread in the health sector. The challenge is to combine this infrastructure into one federated platform and maximize the added value by using advanced interoperability data formats and APIs.

The way aeronautical information is managed and disseminated must be modernized. Current aeronautical information services (AIS) methods for storing, publishing, disseminating, querying, and updating the volume of data required for the effective management of air traffic control have become obsolete. This does not contribute to preventing airspace congestion, which turns into a limiting factor for economic growth and generates negative effects on the environment. Owing to this, some work plans for improving AIS and air traffic flow focus on data and services interoperability to allow an efficient and coordinated use and exchange of aeronautical information. Geographic information technologies (GIT) and spatial data infrastructures (SDI) are comprehensive technologies upon which any service that integrates geospatial information can rely. The authors are working on the assumption that the foundations and underlying technologies of GIT and SDI can be applied to support aeronautical data and services, considering that aeronautical information contains a large number of geospatial components. This article presents the design, development, and implementation of a Web-based system architecture to evolve and enhance the use and management of aeronautical information in any context, e.g., in aeronautical charts on board, in control towers, and in aeronautical information services. After conducting a study into the use of aeronautical information, it was found that users demand specific requirements regarding reliability, flexibility, customization, integration, standardization, and cost reduction. These issues are not being addressed with existing systems and methods. A system compliant with geographic standards (OGC, ISO) and aeronautical regulations (ICAO, EUROCONTROL) and supported by a scalable and distributed Web architecture is proposed. This proposal would solve the shortcomings identified in the study and provide aeronautical information management (AIM) with new methods and strategies. In order to seek aeronautical data and services interoperability, a comprehensive aeronautical metadata profile has been defined. This proposal facilitates the use, retrieval, updating, querying, and editing of aeronautical information, as well as its exchange between different private and public institutions. The tests and validations have shown that the proposal is achievable.
