PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to look at the journey and experience of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) Research Data Management (RDM) practice to respond to the needs of researchers in an academic library.Design/methodology/approachThe research data services (RDS) practice is based on the FAIR data principle. And the authors designed the RDM Stewardship framework to implement the RDS step by step.FindingsThe HKU Libraries developed and implemented a set of RDS under a research data stewardship framework in response to the recent evolving research needs for RDM amongst the academic communities. The services cover policy and procedure settings for research data planning, research data infrastructure establishment, data curation services and provision of online resources and instructional guidelines.Originality/value This study provides an example of an approach to respond to the needs of the academic libraries about how to start the RDS including the data policy, data repository, data librarianship and data curation.

This report summarises our activities and achievements in integrating the Data Stewardship Wizard (DSW) and Data Information System (DAISY) tools during the ELIXIR BioHackathon Europe 2021. As a data information system for GDPR compliance, DAISY is focused on a single goal – gathering all information required for GDPR accountability of biomedical research projects. On the other hand, DSW is very flexible and can be used beyond data management planning. We worked on the integration between both tools on two fronts. Firstly, we created a new Knowledge Model in DSW together with a document output template to be able to generate a data protection impact assessment (DPIA). Secondly, we introduced a new integration type between projects in DSW and DAISY that allows the querying of DAISY data upon document generation in DSW. Both of these independent activities brought successful results that were polished and published after the actual BioHackathon. Finally, we provide the related materials as an on-demand training course in the ELIXIR eLearning Platform.

In France, the archaeological sector has undergone a major shift in the last 10 years in terms of digital data creation and management. The digital transformation of the profession and its practices is still in progress and is not uniform. If general policies and laws are now clearly adopted at a national level, then institutional or individual situations are more complex. We can clearly separate the development-led and academic sectors, with reference to the volume of data produced and the challenges faced. A critical overview of the barriers highlights the fact that, beyond technical issues, data management (specifically sharing) is a human challenge in terms of scientific priority and in the adoption of new practices. This article gives an overview of the main questions and issues with reference to major nationwide initiatives.

<p>Purpose – The purpose of this case study is to examine the rationality for taking an enterprise approach towards metadata’s development. It outlined and discussed the benefits and challenges involved from both theoretical and practical perspectives.  Methodology – The data for this case study is collected through a one on one interview method. The findings were discussed and analysed with other literature.  Findings – Taking an enterprise wide approach towards the development of metadata offers both short-term and long-term benefits to the Ministry. In particular, the short-term benefits include efficiency in time to answer, re-use and re-purposing of existing information. The long-term benefits are the ability to operate at a strategic level with its data and information.  On the other hand, the different level of understanding towards the concept of metadata at present, in addition to a lack of a clear guardianship from a data perspective has lead to challenges in gaining a level of active contribution and ongoing maintenance.  This report suggested that it is essential for the Ministry to maintain a constant marketing style of communication to promote the understanding of the metadata and to incorporate the principle of data stewardship in managing the component of metadata mapping.  Value – This case study provides value by explaining the concept and outlining the key benefits and issues involved to those organisations discovering the topic of metadata management for the first time. This case study adds additional value by offering rare insights into taking an enterprise approach towards the development of a business metadata, offering practical learning and suggestions for other organisations that are embarking on a similar journey.</p>

The guiding principle for data stewardship dictates that data be FAIR: findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable. Data reuse allows researchers to probe data that may have been originally collected for other scientific purposes in order to gain novel insights. The current study reuses the Transforming Research and Clinical Knowledge for Traumatic Brain Injury (TRACK-TBI) Pilot dataset to build upon prior findings and ask new scientific questions. Specifically, we have previously used a multivariate analytics approach to multianalyte serum protein data from the TRACK-TBI Pilot dataset to show that an inflammatory ensemble of biomarkers can predict functional outcome at 3 and 6 months post-TBI. We and others have shown that there are quantitative and qualitative changes in inflammation that come with age, but little is known about how this interaction affects recovery from TBI. Here we replicate the prior proteomics findings with improved missing value analyses and non-linear principal component analysis and then expand upon this work to determine whether age moderates the effect of inflammation on recovery. We show that increased age correlates with worse functional recovery on the Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended (GOS-E) as well as increased inflammatory signature. We then explore the interaction between age and inflammation on recovery, which suggests that inflammation has a more detrimental effect on recovery for older TBI patients.

Data governance is a growing concern in the dairy farm industry because of the lack of legal regulation. In this commentary paper, we discuss the status quo of the available legislation and codes, as well as some possible solutions. To our knowledge, there are currently four codes of practice that address agriculture data worldwide, and their objectives are similar: (1) raise awareness of diverse data challenges such as data sharing and data privacy, (2) provide data security, and (3) illustrate the importance of the transparency of terms and conditions of data sharing contracts. However, all these codes are voluntary, which limits their adoption. We propose a Farmers Bill of Rights for the dairy data ecosystem to address some key components around data ownership and transparency in data sharing. Our hope is to start the discussion to create a balanced environment to promote equity within the data economy, encourage proper data stewardship, and to foster trust and harmony between the industry companies and the farmers when it comes to sharing data.

There is increasing potential to improve the research and reporting on the health and wellbeing of Indigenous and Tribal peoples through the collection and (re)use of population-level data. As the data economy grows and the value of data increases, the optimization of data pertaining to Indigenous peoples requires governance that defines who makes decisions on behalf of whom and how these data can and should be used. An international a priori PROSPERO (#CRD42020170033) systematic review was undertaken to examine the health research literature to (1) identify, describe, and synthesize definitions and principles; (2) identify and describe data governance frameworks; and (3) identify, describe, and synthesize processes, policies and practices used in Indigenous Data Governance (ID-GOV). Sixty-eight articles were included in the review that found five components that require consideration in the governance of health research data pertaining to Indigenous people. This included (1) Indigenous governance; (2) institutional ethics; (3) socio-political dynamics; (4) data management and data stewardship; and (5) overarching influences. This review provides the first systematic international review of ID-GOV that could potentially be used in a range of governance strategies moving forward in health research.
